This paper deals with the multiple points of view and open ending of The Collector(1963), the first novel of John Fowles. Two main characters appear in this work. The novel consists of four parts, three of which are narrated by Frederick Clegg, except the second part written by Miranda Grey. The novel's two texts are presented by two alternative first-person narrators.
Part one is Clegg's account of the kidnapping of Miranda Grey. Clegg, a secret
admirer of Miranda, won much money in a football pool, resigned his position as a city clerk. He begins to fancy how Miranda would like him if only she knew him. He buys a van and a house in the country with an enclosed room in its basement that he remodels to make securable and hideable. He captures Miranda, using a rag soaked in chloroform, who is walking home alone from a movie. In his cellar, there is a severe conflict of wills to escape and to possess. Clegg tries to please Miranda, in terms of things, but he fails to understand human relations except in terms of things. His inferiority complex and ignorance deepen and worsen, in the abnormal situation. During her bad cold and pneumonia, she can't be helped by a doctor in confinement. She repeats the difficulty of breathing at the first time.
Miranda's diary rehearses the same events from her point of view. It complements and emphasizes Clegg's narrative. Sometimes it gives us different account of the same event. Therefore, the reader can enjoy two versions of the same events.
The third Clegg's section tells of Miranda's death and the possibility of Clegg's suicide. Clegg realized how ill Miranda is, goes for a doctor two times, and fails to bring a doctor with him. Miranda dies without any help, and Clegg plans to commit suicide. He considers a possible ending of this novel.
In final section, Clegg describes a new outlook. He decides that he is not responsible for Miranda's death, that his mistake was kidnapping someone too far above him, socially. The novel ends with Clegg's thinking that he has not made up his mind about Marian(another M!) He put the stove down in the cellar because the room needs drying out. The novel hints us a strong possibility of a new kidnapping.
In conclusion, both Miranda and Clegg, entrapped in the cellar and in his narrow self of inferiority complex respectively, fail to escape and to obtain freedom. The novel's narrative structure, where Clegg's narrative contains and imprisons Miranda's diary, is very appropriate to novel's theme of imprisonment. Miranda dies because there is another Muse for the writer, Clegg, to pursue.
