국군에 관한 사진표현 분석 = A Study of Photographic Expression of the Military

국문 초록 (Abstract)

군인은 국민의 생명과 안전을 지키는 수호자이자 국가의 안정과 통합을 상징하는 존재로 평가된다.
국군 초상사진은 단순한 외형 기록을 넘어 군인의 내면과 장비, 군사 기술을 시각적으로 조명하는 독창적인 연구 주제이다. 이를 통해 군인은 집단 조직의 일부를 넘어 독립적 주체로서 시대 변화 속에서의 역할과 사명감을 탐구하는 대상이 된다. 본 연구에서는 보병, 포병, 기갑, 공병, 통신, 의무 등 다양한 병과의군인을 촬영하였다. 병과별 특성과 임무는 복장, 장비, 자세에 반영되며 군복의 질감과 장비 착용 방식은실전 환경과 군사 기술의 진화를 시각화한다. 이는 외형적 기록을 넘어 군인의 책임과 정체성을 드러내는 시각적 상징으로 기능한다. 특히 본 연구는 집단 이미지에서 벗어나 개인의 내면에 주목하였다. 표정과 눈빛, 자세는 군 생활의 경험과 긴장, 사명감을 담고 있으며 기존 공식 군사 사진과 달리 인간적인 면모에 집중했다. 이러한 접근은 군인의 감정과 현실을 생생히 전달하며 관람자의 공감과 이해를 유도하는중요한 장치로 작용한다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 국군 초상사진을 통해 현대 군인의 정체성과 개별 서사를 조명하며 그 존재가 시대 변화 속에서 어떻게 진화하고 있는지를 시각적으로 드러냈다. 향후 국군 초상사진은 국민과의 신뢰를 강화하는 소통의 매개가 될 수 있으며 사진예술이 사회적 공감과 연결을 형성하는 데 기여할 수 있음을 보여주는 사례로 평가된다.

A soldier is recognized not only as a protector of national safety but also as a symbol of unity and stability. This study explores the portrait photography of the Republic of Korea Armed Forces as a unique research subject that extends beyond simple documentation, offering visual insights into the identity, equipment, and evolving military technologies of soldiers. By photographing personnel from branches such as infantry, artillery, armor, engineering, communications, and medical corps, the study reveals how uniforms, equipment, and posture reflect both the specific functions of each branch and broader changes in military practice. Moving beyond group representations, the study highlights individual inner narratives. Facial expressions and body language capture the emotional weight and sense of duty of each subject, presenting a human perspective rarely visible in official imagery. This approach enhances public understanding and empathy, demonstrating that portrait photography can function both as a visual record of transformation and as a bridge connecting military and civilian spheres. Ultimately, these portraits underscore the evolving identity of soldiers in contemporary society and affirm the role of photography in building public trust and social cohesion.
