The purpose of this paper is to examine recent trends in what to teach in the American social studies curriculum. For this purpose, this paper mainly content standards in the California History-Social Science Framework, which was first published in 1987 and updated in 2000, The California History-Social Science Framework is the first effort to reform the social studies curriculum in the United States in recent two decades, responding to social and educational demands for a history-oriented social studies curriculum. This framework is centered in the chronological study of history and expanded time allotted to history and geography to three years each for American history and geography and world history and geography. However, this framework also emphasizes an integrated and correlated approach to the teaching of history-social science. Content standards in this framework highlight the importance of understanding American democratic values, ideals, institutions, and creeds, and the American cultural and historical root. Western civilization. It also reflects pluralistic nature of the American society, in which men and women and different racial, religious, ethnic groups live together. Democratic citizenship education in this framework serves to educate responsible citizens and cultivate the national identity in students. A multicultural perspective in this framework contributes to bringing diverse experiences of different class, different racial, ethnic, and religious groups in American history and world history. This prepares American citizens for living in the contemporary world, which is characterized with cultural pluralism and global interdependence. In the same veil with California History-Social Science Framework, recently developed social studies or history curriculum emphasize democratic citizenship education and incorporate a multicultural perspective in content.
