원어민 영어보조교사의 활용실태와 개선 방안 = Utilization of Native Assistant English Teachers and Its Improvement Plans

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to examine whether native assistant English teachers are efficiently being put to use and to analyze related problems, and to present a plan to improve the efficiency of English education by effectively using the native assistant English teachers.
For this study, surveys were carried out through mail and e-mail by 42 elementary school teachers and 128 students together with native assistant English teachers in Jeollabuk-do. The results are as follows.
First, from the investigation was held about the current state of the application of native assistant English teachers and analyzed how they were currently being used, and it turned out that they were not being effectively being put to use. Most teachers were not aware of the native assistant English teacher system in detail and answered that it was an efficient system for learning.
Their understanding of the system was that it was inefficient and that it did little to revitalize the English education or to reduce the private education costs.
The parents and teachers were also negative about the time assignment. The reality is that most schools had an hour class per week. Concerning expanding the number of lessons with native assistant English teachers, the 49.2% of students answered in favor and the teachers agreed that the current schedule wasn't effective.
Also most teachers didn't have enough time to discuss the lesson before class. From the above results, we were be able to conclude that the native assistant English teachers weren't being used effectively.
Second, the satisfaction and effectiveness of the application of native assistant English teachers were analyzed in order to see if they were achieving their goals, and the results showed that neither the teachers nor the students were satisfied with the native teachers' professionalism and quality as teachers. They thought that the native teachers' level of English wasn't appropriate and the biggest problem in class was the difficulty of communication.
But the teachers and students agreed on the fact that lessons with native assistant English teachers help improve their English communication skills. They answered that it had helped their listening and speaking and reduced their fear of foreigners. We can conclude that it is necessary to improve the quality of the native teachers in order to bring greater satisfaction and effectiveness of the system.
Third, in order to satisfy the teachers and students properly, training on cooperative lessons and assignment system of native assistant English teachers should be activated. The most favorable form of efficient education chosen was a cooperative lesson by the native teacher and Korean teacher. In order to fulfill this desire, an appropriate system that supports both the Korean and native teachers' training is in need. It is also necessary to come up with various plans to increase the assigned frequency of the lessons.
