가속기 연관산업의 부산지역 신성장산업화 사전 연구 = A Study on the Evaluation of the Accelerators related Industries for Busan City’s Future

Fields related to accelerators intended to accelerate particles or their electrons and nuclei have been steadily growing and expanding at home and abroad. These accelerators are used to understand the surface or internal structure of a substance in order to conduct basic research as well as to treat different cancers. Moreover, the applications are being diversified, ranging from research and development to industrial, educational, and military purposes as well as for use in public institutions. Projects to develop a basic science research group are under way as a program to strengthen the capacity of Korea’s basic science. Specifically, a Pohang Light Source related cluster is vigorously being constructed in Pohang, and the Radiological & Medical Sciences cluster is being developed in Gijang, Busan.
If accelerators are incorporated into these clusters, the ripple effect will be tremendous. In this context, it is necessary to make preparations to attract various government-funded projects for accelerator-related technology development. This study was conducted to examine the validity of setting up accelerator-related industries as a new growth engine in Busan.
As a result of analyzing accelerator-related industries, the entire complex including the comprehensive use of radiation is equal to approximately KRW 16.2 trillion. Industrial use amounts reach approximately KRW 12.5 trillion, taking up 77% of the overall scale, with medicine, agriculture, non-destructive testing, and radurization adding up to about KRW three trillion, KRW 360 billion, KRW 100 billion, and KRW 10 billion, respectively. The scale of accelerator-related industries in Busan was estimated to be comparable to 348 establishments with ten or more employees, of which number of employees are 10,867 with the production capacity of KRW 819.6 billion. In other words, this scale comes to nearly 1,981 establishments each with one or more employees, whose aggregate number of employees reaches 16,141. If Busan achieves successful accelerator industrialization, it will be the most important city among production industries nationwide. Centered on the precision instruments industry, moreover, the growth of the accelerator industry in Busan will have direct and indirect production inducement effects on this city. A review of new growth industrialization conditions based on objective judgment indicated that accelerator-related industries can serve as a new growth driver.
Therefore, it is essential to support research and development to cultivate industries as well as the replacement of imports, and secure manpower equivalent to that of advanced countries while considering fields such as physics, medical science, and biotechnology first. Also, the boundaries of accelerator-related applications should be pushed to the fields of port monitoring, education, and space science as well as precision machine and nano-technology industries.
