The "contemporary calligraphy" discussed in this article is based on the "contemporaneity" of artistic language rather than its temporal context. Among the various contemporary calligraphy styles, the emergence of "action calligraphy" marks a significant transformation in the field of contemporary calligraphy. It not only challenges the traditional framework of calligraphy, enriching and diversifying the calligraphic language, but also stimulates artists to break free from conventional symbolic orders. In action calligraphy, creators transcend the limitations of traditional calligraphy through the primal force of their bodies, unconsciously crossing artistic boundaries with their bodily movements. This approach redefines the essence of calligraphy and offers artists a novel perspective for creation.
As an innovative extension of artistic language, action calligraphy opens up vast possibilities for artists' creations. Calligraphy is no longer confined to a two-dimensional space but acts within the art field in the form of "performance art." Behind the "actions" lies the artists' strong desire for bodily expression, with the "actions" serving as carriers of rich life experiences. The calligraphic works become visual manifestations of these actions. The first question that needs to be addressed in the study of "action" in calligraphy art is: What is the significance of "action" in the contemporary context, and how is "action" realized within the calligraphy domain? Starting from the application of "action" in calligraphy, this article delves into the importance of action elements in contemporary calligraphy, their developmental trajectory, and the connections between abstract expressionism and mass media. It investigates the compositional rules and practical significance of action language in calligraphy art creation.
