TINY ALICE의 연구 : 의식(儀式)적 요소를 중심으로 = (A) Study of Tiny Alice

My purpose in this paper is to study Tiny Alice, focusing on ritual form. The commanding image of the play which has deluded so many of its viewers, the form which this image motivates, the characterization, and the theme which this image and form may convey are closely related with the ritual form.
Throughout the play, the image of "enclosure" is repeated. And the play displays the progress of Julian, the central figure, from one type of enclosure to another. And the movement-pattern, which enables the central figure of this play to pass from one enclosure to another, is that of ritual, a ceremonial action with a set of procedures possessing form repetition, mystery, community, and magic.
It seems that this play consists of three rituals where the first ritual initiates Julian into a new level of understanding himself, the second ritual is concerned with transforming Julian from the enclosure of his own human nature to an enclosure with a more complete essence of truth, and the final ritual consists of the actual death of Julian not only to physical existence, but even to union with the mental symbols he has attempted to ignore or disbelieve in his lifetime.
In other words, the initiation into a new kind of selfawareness, the act of rebirth in the womb so that a new existence can commence, and finally the sacrificial slaughter following a ritual communion constitute the order of the rituals in Tiny Alice.
All the characters enclosed by the mansion of which the model is an image serve as participants in the rituals. All the characters except Julian are merely surrogates, visible representations of a more powerful force controlling them like puppets. Miss Alice represents the symbol of truth and also the womb for attaining rebirth, Lawyer seems to stand for the Apollonian characteristics of reason and order in Julian's nature, Butler seems to suggest a more primodial Dionysian aspect of Julian's nature which encouraged emotional outburst, and Cardinal seems to suggest pseudospirituality and arbitrary dogma attached to established religion. Each of these "typed" characters try to convert the spiritual man, Julian, to a new god, the model.
Julian is typical of the vast majority of men today.
He is unequipped to comprehend most of contemporary scientific achievement and prefers to believe in the existence of some unexplainable master force governing the universe.
Julian is an innocent individual who believes in the illusory dream that communication is possible, especially in a direct relationship with God. By the end of the play, however, he seems to sacrifice his values and accepts the model, an abstraction, as his new God.
The real world he accepts is a place where communication is broken down and reality is frequently synonymous with illusion. Thus, the ritualistic sacrifice provides a pessimistic ending.
With these ritual forms and characterization, Albee shows his view of modern society---we are living in a non-communicative world where abstractions abound and most of us must succumb to these abstractions, and only a few can overcome them and live in a world of reality.
