장 칼뱅의 섭리론 : 기독교강요 최종판(1559)의 섭리론에 근거한 하나님의 섭리와 악의 관계에 대한 기독론적 고찰 = John Calvin’s Doctrine of Providence : A Christological Study of the Relationship between Divine Providence and Evil, Grounded in the Doctrine of Providence in the 1559 Institutes of the Christian Religion

국문 초록 (Abstract)

하나님의 섭리와 악의 관계는 기독교 신학에서 끊임없이 논란이 되는난제 중 하나다. 특히 이는 교회 안팎의 모든 인간에게 직접적으로 문제의식을 일으키는 실존적 문제다. 그래서 섭리론은 시대마다 중요한 주제로 다루어지는 것이 요청된다. 그럼에도 불구하고 정작 기독교 신학계 안에서 섭리론에 대한 연구는 매우 부족하다. 이러한 섭리론 연구의결핍은 무엇보다 특히 칼뱅의 섭리론의 연구사에서도 나타난다.
기존의 칼뱅 연구의 경향 및 결과와 다르게 오히려 칼뱅은 그의 신학의핵심 토대 중 하나로서 섭리론을 세우고 있다. 본 연구에서 그 증명을 위해 󰡔기독교강요󰡕 최종판(1559) I권 16-18장의 섭리론이 집중적으로 다루어진다. 먼저 칼뱅이 하나님의 창조와 섭리 그리고 하나님의 섭리와악의 관계를 어떻게 해설하는지 관찰한다. 그 결과 칼뱅의 섭리론에서마지막까지 해결되지 않은 채 남은 결정적인 세 가지 문제, 즉 ‘하나님의허락과 의지’의 문제, ‘하나님의 상반된 두 의지’의 문제, ‘하나님의 책임’ 의 문제가 두드러지게 드러난다. 이 문제들과 관련하여 자명한 모순이있음에도 불구하고 칼뱅은 그의 주장을 끝까지 철회하지 않는데, 결국칼뱅은 마지막으로 󰡔기독교강요󰡕 최종판에 새롭게 추가한 I권 18장을통해 세 가지 미해결 문제를 두고 최종적 해결을 시도한다.
칼뱅은 하나님의 섭리와 악의 관계에 발생하는 현저한 모순을 오직 하나님의 말씀의 계시를 중심으로 해석한다. 특히 칼뱅은 󰡔기독교강요󰡕 최종판 I권 18장에서 제시한 ‘예수 그리스도 사건’(Christusgeschehen) 을 논거로 한 논증으로 최종적 해결을 시도한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 칼뱅의 해결 방법에는 한계가 나타나는데, 이 연구에서는 칼뱅의 섭리론의 방법적 한계를 극복할 수 있는 발전적인 대안으로서 ‘예수 그리스도관점’(Christusperspektive)을 통한 논증이 제안된다. 한 인격 안에서 신성과 인성의 역설적 연합을 이루는 예수 그리스도의 관점을 통한 접근방법론은 현재성을 지닌 악의 문제성을 직시하면서도, 그와 모순의 관계로 보이는 하나님의 전능과 선에 대한 확실성을 동시에 놓치지 않는해석 방법의 가능성을 연다.
이 연구는 기독교 신학에서의 섭리론의 의미와 가치, 그중에서 특히 칼뱅의 신학에서 그동안 묻혀 있던 섭리론의 의미와 가치를 재발견하게한다. 특히 본 연구는 하나님 섭리와 악의 관계에 있는 모순적 난제가 칼뱅의 ‘예수 그리스도 사건’의 방법 그리고 더 나아가‘예수 그리스도 관점’ 의 방법으로 새롭게 접근 및 해석될 수 있음을 보여준다. 그 결과 하나님의 현재적 섭리를 근본으로 삼고 있는 기독교 신학은 현재성을 담지하여 활성화되며, 모든 교의는 예수 그리스도 중심으로 더욱 세워질 수 있는 현재적 동력을 기대할 수 있다. 이와 더불어 기독교 교회 안팎에서는시대를 막론하고 인간에게 가장 실존적 문제인 악의 실재에도 불구하고전능하시고 선하신 하나님에 대한 견고한 신뢰가 유지될 수 있는 길을찾게 된다. 이는 결국 칼뱅의 선언처럼 하나님의 섭리에 대한 깨달음을놓치는 최악의 비참이 아닌, 그 앎을 올바로 지니는 최고의 행복으로 이끈다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The relationship between divine providence and the reality of evil remains one of the most enduring and contested problems in Christian theology. Far from being a merely speculative issue, it constitutes a profoundly existential concern that directly affects human life both inside and outside the church. For this reason, the doctrine of providence has continually called for renewed theological reflection in every era. Despite its significance, systematic research on providence within Christian theology has been strikingly limited, particularly in the scholarly reception of John Calvin’s doctrine of providence.
Against prevailing trends in Calvin scholarship, this study argues that Calvin situates the doctrine of providence at the very core of his theological framework. To substantiate this claim, the study focuses on Calvin’s exposition of providence in Book I, Chapters 16-18 of the final 1559 edition of the Institutes of the Christian Religion. It begins by examining Calvin’s account of divine creation and providence, as well as his interpretation of the relationship between divine providence and evil. This examination brings to light three decisive unresolved tensions within Calvin’s doctrine: the tension between divine permission and divine will, the problem of the two apparently opposing wills of God, and the question of divine responsibility. Although these tensions reveal evident contradictions, Calvin consistently maintains his position. Ultimately, in the newly added Chapter 18 of Book I of the final edition of the Institutes, Calvin attempts a final resolution of these three unresolved problems.
Calvin interprets the apparent contradictions in the relationship between divine providence and evil solely in light of God’s self-revelation in Scripture. In particular, he attempts a final resolution by appealing to the “event of Jesus Christ” (Christusgeschehen) as articulated in Book I, Chapter 18 of the final edition of the Institutes. Nevertheless, Calvin’s approach reveals certain methodological limitations. In response, this study proposes a constructive and developmental alternative through the concept of the “perspective of Jesus Christ” (Christusperspektive). Grounded in the paradoxical unity of divinity and humanity in the person of Jesus Christ, this Christological perspective offers a methodological framework that simultaneously confronts the contemporary and historically conditioned reality of evil while upholding the confession of God’s omnipotence and goodness, without prematurely resolving the theological tension between them.
This study thereby re-evaluates the theological significance and enduring value of the doctrine of providence in Christian theology, particularly by recovering the largely overlooked importance of providence in Calvin’s theology. It demonstrates that the paradoxical problem of the relationship between divine providence and evil can be reinterpreted through both Calvin’s account of the event of Christ and a more expansive Christological perspective. Consequently, Christian theology, grounded in the present actuality of God’s providence, is revitalized, and all doctrines may receive a renewed theological impulse to be more fully grounded in Jesus Christ. Moreover, this approach opens a theological path by which, across all ages and both within and beyond the church, steadfast trust in the omnipotent and benevolent God may be sustained, despite the reality of evil as the most pressing existential challenge for human beings. Accordingly, it leads not to the uttermost misery resulting from the neglect of knowledge of divine providence, as Calvin emphasizes, but to the supreme blessedness attained through rightly knowing and affirming it.
