The Yeonhaengnok contain rumors and strange stories that are hard to believe. They were collected to find out information about the opposing country. Rumors can influence public sentiment, move public sentiment, and even cause incidents. This paper deals with the story of the Qing emperor raping married women.
For example, there is a story that the Shunzhi Emperor had an affair with a military officer's wife, framed her husband, killed him, and made her Emperor's Wife, or that the Yongzheng Emperor stole the chastity of a royal widow or his son's widow and built a shrine for her husband.
These rumors have no basis in historical records. Professor Zhang Bowei questioned the truth of record in the Yeonhangnok, and it can be said that these rumors are indeed untrue records. Professor Zhang saw that it deviates from authenticity in the form of ‘enthusiasm’ or ‘hatred’ depending on the inclination of the observer.
However, even if the rumors are distorted and exaggerated, the reality of the events that the rumors were trying to tell exists.
Also, over time,Rumors enhance the interesting factor of an event compared to its actual reality. Therefore, rumors have two elements that coexist, which help us get closer to the truth but also take us away from it.
It is a rumor that is mixed with hatred or a sense of superiority toward the Qing Dynasty, but it can also be said to be a story that approaches the concubine system of the Manchu tradition that was secretly maintained in the Qing imperial family through conjecture and imagination. Only when we approach the events of the time that exist amidst distortion and exaggeration can we understand the duality of the rumor.
