During the recent global pandemic situation, the paradigm of learning changed as most university lectures made use of non-face-to-face learning using learning management systems such as the Learning Management System (LMS). Most online education has been based on individual and consumer choices, but non-face-to-face classes due to COVID-19 were an inevitable choice in order to prevent the suspension of classes. As distance education at the university level began without sufficient advanced preparation, many college students and instructors with insufficient experience in online classes suffered a lot in the non-face-to-face environment. In order to improve the lecture satisfaction of college students, the need to identify the factors affecting non-face-to-face classes in three dimensions has been raised. This understanding will provide a practical means of creating a more important learner-centered environment in the non-face-to-face era.
The purpose of this study is to examine the linear relationship between self-regulated learning, presence, affective factors, and lecture satisfaction in non-face-to-face classes, and the influence of measurement variables. Unlike previous studies that studied individual factors affecting non-face-to-face learning, this study comprehensively reviewed the effects of various factors based on the long-term experiences of learners in four non-face-to-face semesters. In addition, this comprehensive study investigated whether the presence and affective factors mediate self-regulated learning and lecture satisfaction in non-face-to-face learning and compared the effect of group influence on face-to-face and non-face-to-face learning experiences.
To this end, the study had three research questions:
[Research Question 1] Does non-face-to-face learning have a positive (+) effect on self-regulated learning, presence(teaching presence, cognitive presence, social presence), affective factors, and lecture satisfaction?
[Research Question 2] Is the effect of self-regulated learning, presence, affective factors, and lecture satisfaction in non-face-to-face learning differences between face-to-face and non-face-to-face groups?
[Research Question 3] In non-face-to-face learning, do the presence (teaching presence, cognitive presence, and social presence) and affective factors mediate the relationship between self-regulated learning and lecture satisfaction?
To answer the research questions, a research model was constructed by deriving research problems that verified the hypotheses of previous studies. The participant sample was 522 college students with four semesters of non-face-to-face class experience. Data was collected through online surveys, and the collected data was empirically analyzed through statistical techniques. Factor analysis and reliability analysis were conducted to verify the reliability and validity of the collected data. Path analysis and variance analysis were conducted using correlation analysis and structural equations. To this end, self-regulated learning, teaching presence, cognitive presence, social presence, and affective factors were set as individual difference variables, and lecture satisfaction was set as a dependent variable.
The results of Research Question 1 are as follows. Self-regulated learning had a positive (+) effect on the presence (teaching, cognitive, and social presence) and teaching presence and cognitive presence had a positive (+) effect on lecture satisfaction. It was confirmed that the influence of self-regulated learning on cognitive presence and the cognitive presence is the most influential factor on academic achievement and lecture satisfaction. On the other hand, there was no statistically significant finding that showed social presence had a positive (+) effect on lecture satisfaction.
For Research Question 2, the influence of teaching presence, cognitive presence, and affective factors on lecture satisfaction was high in both groups of 1st, 2nd and 3 rd, 4 th year students. However, there was no statistically significant finding that indicated that social presence had a positive(+) effect on lecture satisfaction.
The results of Research Question 3 confirmed that self-regulated learning had an indirect effect on lecture satisfaction through presence (teaching, cognitive, and social presence) and affective factors. Importantly, social presence did not directly affect lecture satisfaction, but self-regulated learning indirectly affected lecture satisfaction through social presence. In other words, if the level of self-regulated learning was high online, learners actively participated in learning activities and also increased the level of social presence, affecting lecture satisfaction.
The following implications can be made from this study: there is a need to create an environment to raise the level of social presence for non-face-to-face learners, design affective sub-factors for non-face-to-face English learners, and present materials based on both face-to-face and non-face-to-face learner's experiences. Above all, the study confirmed the importance of presence in non-face-to-face learning, and students with a higher level of self-regulation strengthen learning by positively recognizing and utilizing presence. Through this, instructors should increase the possibility of learners' self-regulated learning and enhance the satisfaction of lectures in non-face-to-face learning.
