Although the scholars have different opinions of the origin of ying-yang principle, they generally begin with interpretation of ying-yang. Yang Gye Cho, quoting the Shuowenjiezi, explains the origin of Ying-Yang by interpreting ying as darkness and yang as brightness, Seo Bok Gwan also describe the origin of Ying-Yang by interpreting the characters of ying and yang quoting the Shuowenjiezi. Joseph Needam explains in his book 'The Science and Culture of China' that ying and yang are related with darkness and brightness by literally interpreting the characters. Likewise most of Ying-Yang scholars explain its origin by simply inquiring the documents such as the history books or the scriptures. But, in Chinese culture, the history that can be studied through written recording only goes as far as 1,400 B.C. In Jia-gu Bu-ci, the first known characters or Jin-wen of West Chou period, the concept of ying-yang is nowhere to be found. Knowing that the history of mankind goes back 500,000 years, we cannot assume that the ying-yang concept is confined in only 1,400 years of written records. Without understanding the original archetype of ying-yang, one cannot analyze its surface. To do it, we have to study the structure of human brain, the basis of consciousness formed throughout the long human history; the symbolism and hidden meaning of mythology, creation of the dualistic brain structure; and put together the fragmented relics of the past to analyze the ancient people's nature and world. That's because, through the symbols of the mythology and the relics, one can discover the ancient people's unrecorded understanding of the nature and the world. The concept of ying-yang is not an intentional one shaped by one person, but rather a universal and essential notion developed over hundreds of thousands of years to connect and harmonize mankind with the natural environment. As the archetype of the collective and unconsciousness is shaped by each body part, that of ying-yang also has its own shape and affected by experience of natural law. Therefore ying-yang is not something that appears in the shape of rational contemplation but rather arbitrarily appears through the symbolic images. We just merely discovers it when it appears.
