集團美術療法이 幼兒의 攻擊性 및 自我尊重感에 미치는 效果 = The Effects of Group Art Therapy on Kindergarten Children's Aggression and Self-esteem

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of group art therapy on aggression reduction and self-esteem improvement of kindergarten children with high aggression.
This research was conducted from October 18 to December 13, 2001. The subjects were kindergarten children who were identified with high aggression in accordance with the Korean Child Behavior Checklist(K-CBCL) and the kindergarten teacher's aggression inventory.
This research was designed according to the nonequivalent control group design which is divided into an experimental group, control group, and non-treatment group. To carry out this research, the experimental group was treated using group art therapy which consisted of 16 sessions, two 60-minute sessions per week for eight weeks. The control group participated with the experimental group in the group activity, but did not participate in art therapy. The non-treatment group only attended the kindergarten class.
After the sessions, the K-CBCL, the teacher's aggression inventory, and the inquiry for self-esteem were administered to the experimental group, control group, and non-treatment group.
The results of this research are as follows:
First, the aggression scores of the experimental group were reduced significantly, while those of the control and non-treatment groups were not. Analysis of the sub-aggression area indicates a significant reduction in verbal aggression, and there was no significant difference between the aggression displayed towards people and the aggression displayed towards objects.
Second, the self acceptance score of the experimental group was significantly improved over that of the control and non-treatment groups, but there were no difference among cognitive competence, peer acceptance, physical competence, and maternal acceptance.
Third, analysis of the activity process during the group art therapy indicates that the attitudes and responses of the subjects improved gradually. Behaviors such as harsh language, quarrels and competition were reduced gradually. As the sessions progressed, the kindergartern children concentrated on their assigned tasks and became more considerate of other group members.
We can conclude that group art therapy is useful in reducing aggression and in improving the self-esteem of kindergarten children. Group art therapy can be the basis of an effective counseling program designed to help children with high aggression to adapt socially.
