Yeats' most compelling preoccupation was with reconciling the apparent opposites in experience ideal and real, escape and involvement, imagination and intellect, contemplation and action. Seen from this perspective, the poetry becomes a perpetual battleground upon which opposing forces meet-body against soul, reason against dream, selflessness against ego. Whenever a single poem suggests a victory of one side, another poem fast behind it renews the conflict. Thus, Yeats always ran his course between two extremities, but at the climax of his quest, he was able for the moment to reject nothing that was part of the human experience-to embrace all of hate, all of love, the actual and the ideal, in one consummate vision.
But the moment of vision or of transcendance is very rare. Moreover he himself gradually drew nearer to death, which was an inescapable fact for a mortal man. Yeats feels that death is defeat of man by Time. He believes that accepting defeat with dignity is the only way not to be ruled by the world of mutability. Yeats suggests, man possesses total freedom and can laugh in the very midst of tragedy, and no external law can possibly keep him from this ultimate expression of the autonomy of his will. Traditionally this has been called "tragic joy," the hero's rising above evil fortune and circumstance. Yeats confirms us that it is the power of imagination that enables us to avoid the utter defeat of man by Time and Space. Creation and gaiety compose the confluence that explains how freedom is achieved and how dread is briefly transfigured within a naturalistic world. And not only the artist, but those who can experience art, may in time itself enjoy the momentary release from tragic necessity.
Just as he never thought of death as final, so he never thought of the destruction of a civilization as the end of the world. That was why he could cry "Rejoice" in the face of an impending catastrophic war. That was the joyful voice of a man who knew how to create out of destruction.
