제자도에 근거한 사회적 영성: 덕 윤리의 조망 = Disciple’s Social Spirituality: Virtue Ethical Approach

This article delves into the significance and tasks of ‘social spirituality’ in fostering the ethical maturity of Korean Christianity. It interprets responsibility, communication, empathy, and hospitality as virtues intrinsically linked to discipleship, advocating for the cultivation of these characters within civil society. The article aims to validate, through a diachronic exploration of social spirituality, that these virtues are fundamental to discipleship as exemplified by Jesus. In the parable of the Good Samaritan, social spirituality is an indispensable element. Paul defined social spirituality as characteristic of the Christian community. Augustine recognized social spirituality as central factor of pilgrim discipleship. Benedict’s emphasis on hospitality, while significant, had tendencies to withdrawal. With Luther, discipleship was brought from the confines of monastic life back into the realm of daily life, and Calvin further laid the groundwork for a public discipleship. Building on diachronic perspective, the synchronic approach to social spirituality in contemporary society reaffirms that the virtues of responsibility, communication, empathy, and hospitality should be viewed as ingredients of ‘being disciple.’ The pursuit of social spirituality grounded in discipleship must be recognized not as a defensive maneuver but as a genuine effort to restore and embody the discipleship.
