Although Olympic games started for the purpose of peace and harmony of human race, in recent years, they take the role of contributing to the national development, empowering politics, economy, society, culture, and sports. Seoul Olympics was the one that contributed to the achievement of the purpose of the Olympics and the national development.
Therefore, resercher would study the influence of Seoul Olympics to Korean national development.
1. Political democratization and upgrading of diplomatic status
Seoul Olympics, unlike LA and Moscow Olympic games, was the largest one where 13,304 players from 160 countries over the world participated, and put the idea of Olympics in practice. This game is evaluated as the opportunity of destroying the wall from the cold war, overcoming the conflict and understanding of ideology and reconciling between East and West, with the participation of China, Soviet Union and other Eastern European nations.
Also, in Korea, it contributed to political democratization with the end of military government through 6.29 declaration After the Olympics, the political and diplomatic status of Korea was improved, as the president made a speech in the UN conference for the first time as a Korean leader.
2. The surplus Olympics and the advancement of Korean economy
Seoul Olympics became the surplus Olympic according to the thorough arrangement of Organization Federation that positively created sources of financial income such as sales of TV broadcasting rights, badge business, commemoration medal, and lottery business and economically managed. Also, Olympics investment business led to the development of related industry such as tourism, leisure sports, and electronic communications and the restoration of deflated economy.
Especially, the improvement of national reputation of Korea provided opportunity of making earlier advancement of Korean economy through the increase of exports, opportunities of economic trade with participating nations, and inflow of foreign capital.
3. United mind of Korean people and social development
Seoul Olympics prepared the chance of peoples unity and social development through the positive participation of people and wide support. Worried at the beginning, Would we hold the game well?, Korea held it successfully with cooperation in the process of preparation and gained national confidence that we could do anything if we have strong mind.
Also, Korea could improve the national reputation and diplomatic skill in the international society, forming the opening attitude toward the 160 participating countries.
4. The advancement of culture and arts
Seoul Olympics became the opportunity to let the world recognize Korean traditional culture throughout the festival of culture and arts, exhibitions, and opening and closing ceremonies and to let staffs, players, and tourists experience and understand Korean history and culture.
5. The development of Physical education and Sports Science
Korea, after the confirmation of holding Olympics, started the development of physical education, creating the department of athletics and arranging sports and their facilities on the national basis, making people perceive the importance of sports. After the Olympics, with the earnings of it, Korea established Seoul Olympic Sports Promotion Foundation and continued financial support.
Also, Seoul Olympic Scientific Congress Organization held Sports Science Congress, approved by IOC, which is evaluated as the Olympic Scientific Congress with the three element, games, culture, and scientific Congress. In the Scientific Congress, 1670 scholars from 58 nations and totals of 3585 were participated and announced 695 thesis.
Especially, in national wide, in the process of preparing and managing the scientific convention for six years from 1982, 120 staffs from 12 subdivision activated scientific meeting every month and, as a result, Korean physical education and Sport was developed to a higher stage.
