The purpose of this study is to analyze the reading range of English textbooks used in Korean public schools in middle school grade 3 and the reading range of English textbooks used in high school grade 1 to find out whether there is a gentle increase in reading difficulty between these two sets of textbooks. Matrix L2 Readability (RDL2) formulas were used to analyze the text statistics. The results were analyzed using Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL), Automated Readability Index (ARI), and Coh-Matrix Coefficient Matrix L2 Readability respectively. Reading difficulty indicators FKGL and ARI measured English utilizing the website readable.io, established by Dave Child, a famous readability evaluator, and the Coh-Matrix Coefficient Matrix L2 Readability was applied utilizing the US website tool.cohmetrix.com.
The results based on the research collected from the FKGL, ARI, and RDL2 in this study are as follows.
First, according to the results of analyzing the level of reading difficulty of each textbook, the level of reading difficulty included in each unit in three textbooks used during the 2009 revision was not sequential. Rather, there were many cases in which the reading difficulty levels of each unit sharply fluctuated. As the sentences become longer and the sentence structures become more complicated within the middle school grade 3 textbooks, the reading difficulty grade increases, while the number of sentences decreases. On the contrary, if the sentences are short and the structure of the sentences are simple, the reading difficulty grade is lowered and the number of sentences is increased. Reading comprehension difficulty for each unit in the revised English textbooks in 2009 are not done sequentially either. Rather, it shows a sharp rise and fall between units. If the reading difficulty grade is high, as in the case of the middle school grade 3 textbooks, the sentences are long and the number of sentences are small. When the reading difficulty grade is low, the sentences are short and the number of sentences is large. However, it is often seen that the difficulty of reading is not controlled simply by the length, structure, and number of sentences. Also, in the 2015 revised high school grade 1 English textbooks, it is hard to find the sequentiality of reading difficulty by unit. Especially, according to the textbooks, the difference of difficulty by each unit is remarkable. As in the 2009 high school grade 1 textbooks, the way, structure, and number of sentences often do not control reading difficulty.
Second, when comparing the middle school grade 3 English textbooks and the 2009 revision for high school grade 1 English textbooks, it can be seen that the grades are slightly up in terms of reading difficulty sequentiality. Therefore, high school English teachers are required to go through the process of selecting textbooks by identifying difficulty in reading textbooks used by middle and high school students. There is no evidence that the three most important textbooks and the revised high school textbooks in 2009 are backed up in terms of difficulty in reading comprehension. A comparison of the middle school grade 3 English textbooks and the 2015 revision for high school grade 1 English textbooks reveals that the grade rises steadily from the standpoint of reading difficulty. Therefore, the risk of grade rises due to wrong selection of textbooks by high school English teachers in terms of reading difficulty seems to be reduced. However, the most important issue is that there is no evidence that the three major textbooks used and the difficulty of reading levels contained in the 2015 high school grade 1 textbooks accurately correlate.
Third, it can be concluded that the high school grade 1 textbooks in 2015 improved in terms of reading difficulty in comparison to the high school grade 1 textbooks used in 2009. Although the textbooks differ in some cases, the comprehensive reading measurements analyzed using the FKGL, ARI, and RDL2 indicate that the reading range of the revised high school grade 1 English textbooks in 2015 is somewhat easier.
As a result, it can be said that the revised high school grade 1 English textbooks of 2015, which have been in use since 2018, contain less difficulty for students in terms of study because the reading difficulty linkage is gentler than the 2009 high school grade 1 textbooks.
