맥가브란의 교회성장 원리에 비추어 본 한국교회 성장 이해 = A study of Korean Church Growth in Light of McGavrans Church Growth Principle

It is said that McGavran's Church Growth Principle has influenced todays Korean Church growth directly and indirectly. In many articles written by denominational church leaders who are projecting for the coming centenary of the Korean Protestant Church, it is not difficult to breathe the air of the McGavarn's Church Growth principle and his harvest theology. Therefore, it has been attempted in this paper to present some salient points of McGavran's Church Growth Principle in order to understand the Korean Church growth today. It is because the Korean Church growth is such a good case study that his principle has been well applied and worked out.
For this reason, an understanding of the McGavran's theory of church growth is introduced in the first part of this paper. In the second major part, and analysis of some sociological reasons for the Korean church growth is attempted. The reasons for undertaking this worthwhile study are four fold. Firstly, the Korean Church will be celebrating her hundredth's anniversary in two years. Secondly, the Korean Church has grown so rapidly that it is necessary to understand the reasons for such a growth in as Asian setting. Thirdly, Korean nationalism in an unique way has helped the Korean Church to grow in contrary to other Asian countries where nationalism has rather hindered church growth, And fourthly, it is not enough to look at the statistic growth and be satisfied, but to project the next one hundred years of the Korean church, especially in the areas of needed critical evaluation.
The first section deals with understanding McGavran's church principle. His background as a missionary in India has colored much of his thinking and writing on church growth. Next, his three basic theories on church growth are explained. The theories are the homogeneous unit church principle, varied receptivity and the process of receptivity and the theory of dicipling and perfectioning. In each section his points are explained followed by some of his major critics' points. The latter is included because his church growth theories are in frequent missiological debate both for and against among theologians, Lastly, personal and subjective remarks are added at the end of each sub-title.
In the second section, a study of the reasons for the Korean Church growth has been attempted. Firstly, a brief statistic survey of the strength of the Korean Protestant Church is given, especially focusing on the Presbyterian and Methodist churches.
Secondly, three important general points are dealt with for understanding its growth. Those points are related to the typical Korean situation. Korean people are a homogeneous people. Korean nationalism and people consciousness are awakening in Korean ; and how Koreans are receptible to the gospel.
In the third section, further effort has been made to understand a relation between Korean Church growth and Koreas socio-political background which has made Koreans receptive for the mission of Christ. It has been attempted to point out that Koreans were politically disinherited people; they were a people under Japanese reign; they were and are a persecuted minority people among strong nations surrounding her; they have been under inflexible political structure; and they always are in an uncertain position due to the war breaking tension and post-revolutionary situations.
By way of closing, some difficult issues of the Korean Church are mentioned as questions and challenges for there do not seem to be any simple solutions at present. But nevertheless, these issues must be taken into consideration by all Korean missionologists who will keep a close eye on church growth in the eighties.
