더보기`Pyeongyang` as a locality played a crucial role in the process of Modern Korea`s self-construction. Though it was just one locality in relation to and belonging to Joseon as a whole, there remained memories as a historic `center` in that it had been once the capital of Goguryeo, and it was considered as a proud center of Joseon society after the period of Daehan jeguk(meaning the Great Han Empire). As a result, Pyeongyang was a domain where complicated mechanisms between "Center/Periphery" were interrelating. During the Patriotic Enlightenment Movement, the nationalist journalists and historians of Joseon tried to write an ancient history of Korea, including from Gojoseon through Goguryeo, Balhae and Goryeo in which `Pyeongyang` was described as the axis of the historiographies because it had been capital cities. Whereas, the historic discourses and descriptions of contemporary Japanese colonialists coined other distorted historiographies(based on the sequence of Gija Joseon, Wiman Joseon and Nangnang) that intended to mainly focus on Joseon culture`s coloniality and passivity. It was while historical knowledge of colonialists and nationalists was relating to and competing with each other that `Pyeongyang` as a locality was constructed and establilished. Colonialization turned whole Joseon into localities, making the locality of Pyeongyang more complicated. Within a frame of Colony-Empire, hierarchical power relations between Center/Periphery could be manipulated in a variety of forms. In a nationalistic viewpoint, cultural localization could be viewed as a subversive means against the center. In case of Lee Tae-jun`s novel, Pae-Gang-Rang, Pyeongyang as a local culture of the empire appears to be a signifier of Joseon that represents the peculiarities and uniqueness of Joseon culture. On the other hand, in Lee Suk-hun`s novel, Yeo-Myong, `Pyeongyang` was also represented as a locality belonging to the homogeneous nation as an empire without a reference to Joseon. After 1930s, there were a range of symposiums, journals and literary works reflecting efforts to rebuild the meaning of `Pyeongyang` within a whole as a nation(that is, Japan Empire). What we can measure from them is enthusiasm to re-establish `Pyeongyang` as a historic, cultural, economic and politic center of colonized Joseon. In the context of nationalism, Pyeongyang was an old capital of ancient countries whose national cultures had been well preserved, while representing and expressing self-esteem as a new center located in the geography of a new empire. For example, in the Korean version of Modern Japan, the city was described not only as a sexual image of Joseon`s female seen through a aesthetic gaze of orientalism, but also an icon of modernity resulting from successful colonization in that the industrial area of the city became a important military supply base after Sino-Japanese War. Since the Liberation, it was reconstructed as a new political center of North Korea as the Cold War began and the separation between North and South Korea hardened. In addition, it became a lost home where displaced people yearned to go back.
