한말 의병 이조승의 서행(西行) 노정과 공간 인식 고찰- 『서행일기(西行日記)』를 중심으로 - = A Study on the Western Travel Line and Space Awareness of Lee Jo-seung's, a Anti-Japanese Righteous Army at the end of the Joseon Dynasty- Focusing on the 『Seoheng-Ilgi』 -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이조승의 『서행일기(西行日記)』는 1896년 6월부터 이듬해 1월까지, 대략 175일이란 기간 동안 수륙 약 5천 리(약 1,964km) 거리를 왕복한 당시 상황을 일기의 형식으로 담아낸 작품이다. 제천의병(호좌의진)의 종사관이었던 그는, 압록강 건너의 요동(만주) 일대로 건너간 스승 유인석을 찾아갔다. 그가 마주한 이역에는 벌판의 혹독한 추위가 몰아치고 있었고, 끼니조차 제대로 해결할 수 없는 극도의 빈곤이 기다리고 있었다. 그곳에 당도한 그는 고단한 여객(旅客)의 실정을 감내하며 불철주야 분투 중이던 동지들의 희생과 헌신을 직접 확인할 수 있었다. 또한, 국내에서는 발견하지 못했던 동포들의 온정과 격려를 받으며 좌절에 빠지지 않고 전진할 수 있는 동력을 확보할 수 있었다. 무엇보다 그곳은 ‘나라의 회복과 중화의 보존’을 위한 사실상 최후의 근거지였지만 기대했던 면모를 실행하기 어려운 조건이었다. 결국 향후를 기약하며 귀국하는 그의 발걸음은 대단히 무거울 수밖에 없었다. 요컨대 작품은 23살의 청년 유생이자 의병의 현실 인식과 당대의 분위기, 또 그의 눈에 비친 이역의 정경과 그곳에서 고군분투하고 있던 동료 문인의 실상을 매우 잘 담고 있다. 또한, 현지 이주 조선인이 구축했던 관계망의 일면까지도 포괄적으로 담으면서도, 역사의 사각에서 자신을 희생하며 묵묵히 역외 항일투쟁에 일조했던 젊은 의병들의 숭고했던 삶을 성찰하게 한다.

Lee Jo-seung's 『Seoheng-Ilgi』 is a work that captures the situation at the time of traveling a distance of about 1,964km of land for 175 days from June 1896 to January of the following year. As a Anti-Japanese Righteous Army, he visited Yoo In-seok, a teacher who crossed into the area of Liaodong (Manju) across the Ap-nok River. When he arrived, the place was gripped by a severe cold, and poverty that couldn't even secure proper meals was waiting for him. Although he experienced the hardships of a traveler there, he was able to witness firsthand the sacrifice and devotion of his comrades. In addition, he received the warmth and encouragement of his compatriots, which were not found in Korea, which became the driving force to advance without falling into frustration. More than anything, it was the defacto last stronghold to reclaim the country and uphold his convictions—but the conditions there made it impossible to fulfill the anticipated mission. Against this backdrop, his steps back home hoping for the future were very heavy.In short, this work provides a clear insight into his perception of reality and the spirit of righteous army, while at the same time evoking reflection on the noble lives of young Anti-Japanese Righteous Army who silently sacrificed and contributed to the anti-Japanese struggle in the margins of history.
