이를 위해서 필자는 요에르크 리거(Joerg Rieger) 박사가 제안한 선교의 유형들에 대한 분류법(mission as outreach, relationship, and inreach)을 차용한다.
리거(Joerg Rieger) 박사는 ‘mission as outreach’로서의 선교유형에 내재되어 있는 단점들을 극복할 수 있는 보다 진일보한 선교 모델 혹은 관점들로 ‘mission as relationship’과 ‘mission as inreach’를 제시하고 있다.
The first objective of this study is to explore a proper understanding of mission in Methodism; for this purpose, the author pays close attention to the historical transitions of mission thought in Methodism. The second objective is to explore healthy self-identity for Methodist missionaries as well as a theologically proper attitude toward mission field from a Methodist perspective. To do this, the author appropriates Joerg Rieger’s categorization of mission models as “outreach, relationship, and inreach” for his own use. In particular, the author interprets Rieger’s “mission as inreach” model in light of a Wesleyan perspective.
The “mission as outreach” model has been predominant in the churches of the colonial and neocolonial periods, including the Methodist Church. The majority of contemporary local churches consider mission in terms of outreach activities. Strategies of “mission as outreach” during the colonial period were directly or indirectly linked to the policies of the colonial government. Further, in the later neocolonial period, mission was connected with capitalism as the economic power of “free market.” In this context, missionary works (in particular, those of Western missionaries) have left uncurable scars and trauma to indigenous people in the mission field.
The concepts of “mission as relationship” and “mission as inreach” in Joerg Rieger offer better alternatives to remedy the defects of the “mission-as-outreach” perspective. However, both have respective weaknesses. The perspective of “mission as relationship” tends to generate an asymmetrical relationship between missionaries and those who are to be evangelized(or proselytized), both in its appropriation into mission fields and in its theological understanding. The perspective of “mission as inreach” had advantage in its conviction that God is the first missionary. It also emphasizes the idea that mission begins not with the conversion of the other, but with the conversion of the missionary himself/herself. Its problem lies in its undue emphasis on “mission as inreach,” which can lead missionaries to the belief that God’s works are unilateral and which can lead them to a failure to find one’s proper role and place in God’s mission. The author is confident that the weakness of the “mission as inreach” perspective can be overcome by Wesley’s thought and then can be appropriated for Methodism because Wesley’s theology emphasizes not only God’s initiative but also human participation in God’s mission.
