조선 후기 제주 연대(烟臺)의 속성 정립을 위한 입지 특성 연구 = A Study on the Locational Characteristics for Correct the Attributes of Jeju Yeondae(Coastal Beacon Fire Station) in The Late Joseon Dynasty

Since Jeju is an island that is geographically far from other regions, an original culture is formed inside, and its specificity is distinguished from other regions. In particular, defense facilities in preparation for invasion from the outside showed different characteristics in order to be advantageously used in consideration of regional characteristics, and their characteristics were also evident in the Jeju area. Among them, the Jeju Yeondae(coastal beacon fire station) is a basic defense facility to carry out liberation reflecting the locality of Jeju during the Joseon Dynasty, so it has a characteristic that is distinct from defense facilities in other regions at the same time. However, since its Attributes have not been clearly derived so far, they have been included in the classification of the existing beacon system centered on the center.
Therefore, in this study, the characteristics of the Jeju Yeondae were analyzed to reconsider the characteristics of the Jeju Yeondae in order to distinguish it from the existing system. To this end, first of all, we tried to derive the difference between the universal Joseon beacon fire station included in the existing system and the beacon fire station and Yeondae of Jeju. Unlike the central system for transmitting signals to capital in the late Joseon Dynasty, the beacon fire station and Yeondae of Jeju were able to confirm the difference in functioning as facilities for self-protection in the Jeju area. To analyze this background, the defense system of Jeju in the late Joseon Dynasty was identified, and the background of the construction and development of the Jeju Yeondae in the late Joseon Dynasty was closely related to the change in the defense system of Jeju in the late Joseon Dynasty.
In addition, the characteristics of the Jeju Beacon Fire Station were analyzed to more clearly derive the difference from the basic Beacon Fire Station on the Korean Peninsula during the Joseon Dynasty. The Jeju Yeondae has been damaged since the abolition of the beacon system, and since it became difficult to grasp the complete shape through the restoration and maintenance process in the 1970s, its characteristics were analyzed for the location considered important in beacon fire station facilities. As a result of the analysis, the location of the Jeju Yeondae was different from the general beacon fire station. In terms of the topography located, the Jeju Yeondae was installed at a low altitude, unlike general beacon fire station, and there was a difference in the slope of the topography. In addition, since all of Jeju's long coastline had to be observed, the connection with the village and port was closer than that of a small number of fortress. The arrangement between facilities also reflected the variable arrangement interval reflecting Jeju's locality rather than following the general regulations of the time. In addition, functions based on the connection with villages and ports were also identified.
Through the analysis of the construction and development background and location, the specificity of the Jeju Yeondae, which is different from the general beacon fire station, could be derived. Based on this, it was judged that the Jeju Yeondae, which was previously classified as border beacon fire station, could be classified into individual beacon fire station with different characteristics. This shows the specificity and independence of Jeju Yeondae, and furthermore, it is meaningful as an example of Jeju's independence system during the Joseon Dynasty.
Therefore, this study aims to newly understand the beacon fire station in areas with special characteristics at the moment when research on not only Jeju but also overall beacon fire station facilities is actively underway. In addition, it is hoped that various architectural heritage studies in Jeju will be actively conducted in line with this trend, so that research on architectural heritage in Jeju with special characteristics can be newly spotlighted.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

제주는 지리적으로 다른 지역과 물리적 거리가 먼 섬이기 때문에 내부에서 독창적인 문화가 형성되어 그에 따른 지역 특수성이 다르게 나타나는 지역이다. 특히, 외부에서의 침입에 대비한 관방시설이 지역 특성을 고려하여 이를 이점으로 활용하기 위해 그 속성에서 차이를 보이는 만큼 제주에서도 그 특수성이 명확하게 나타났다. 그중 제주 연대는 조선시대 제주의 지역성이 반영된 해방을 수행하기 위한 기본적인 관방시설이었기 때문에 같은 시기 다른 지역의 관방시설과는 구별되는 특성을 보유하고 있다. 다만, 현재까지 그 속성이 명확하게 도출되지 않았기 때문에 중앙을 중심으로 하는 기존 봉수 체계 분류에 포함되어왔다.
그래서 본 연구에서는 제주 연대의 성격을 재고하고 기존 체계와 구별하고자 제주 연대의 특성을 분석하였다. 이를 위해 우선, 기존 체계와 포함된 보편적인 조선 봉수와 제주의 봉수·연대를 파악하여 그 차이가 있음을 도출하고자 했다. 조선 후기, 도읍으로의 신호 전달을 위한 중앙 봉수 체계와는 다르게 제주의 봉수·연대는 제주 지역의 자체 수호를 위한 시설로 기능한 차이를 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 배경에 대한 분석을 위해 조선 후기 제주의 관방체계에 대해 파악하였고, 이를 통해 조선 후기 제주 연대의 축조 및 발달 배경을 이해하여 그 배경이 조선 후기 제주의 관방체계 변화와 긴밀하게 관련되었음을 확인할 수 있었다.
또한, 조선시대 한반도의 기본 봉수와의 차이를 더욱 명확하게 도출하기 위해 제주 연대의 특성을 분석하였다. 제주 연대는 봉수제 폐지 이후 훼손되어왔고 1970년대 복원·정비 과정을 거치면서 완전한 형태 파악이 어려워졌으므로 봉수 시설에서 주요하게 고려되는 입지를 대상으로 그 특성을 분석하였다. 분석 결과 제주 연대의 입지는 일반적인 봉수와는 그 특성이 달랐다. 입지한 지형에 있어서 제주 연대는 일반 봉수와는 다르게 낮은 해발고도에 설치되어 있었으며, 지형 경사 역시 차이가 있었다. 이외에도 제주의 긴 해안선을 모두 관측해야 했기 때문에 적은 수의 진성보다 마을 및 포구와의 연관성이 더 긴밀했다. 시설 간의 배치 역시 당시의 일반적인 규정을 따르기보다는 제주의 지역성이 반영된 가변적인 배치 간격이 반영되었다. 이와 더불어 마을 및 포구와의 연관성을 바탕으로 한 기능 역시 파악되었다.
축조 및 발달 배경과 입지 분석을 통해 일반적인 봉수와는 다른 제주 연대의 특수성을 도출할 수 있었다. 이를 바탕으로 기존에 연변봉수로 분류되던 제주 연대를 그 특성을 달리하는 개별적인 봉수로 구별할 수 있다고 판단하였다. 이는 제주 연대의 특수성과 독립성이 나타나는 부분이며, 나아가 조선시대 제주의 독립 체계를 보여주는 사례로 의미가 있다.
따라서 본 연구는 제주뿐만 아니라 전반적인 봉수 시설에 관한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있는 현재에 특수성을 가진 지역의 봉수를 새롭게 이해하고자 한 연구이다. 또한, 이와 같은 흐름에 맞춰 제주 지역의 다양한 건축유산 연구가 활발히 진행되어 특수성을 가진 제주 지역의 건축유산이 새롭게 조명받을 수 있기를 기대한다.
