(An) analysis of the effects of housing market boom upon segregation : focused on the case of Stockholm
The massive economic crisis that hit Europe in 2009 has brought about a new era to the continent in all domains. Now, ten years have passed since the economic turbulence, completely changing the landscapes of urban environments. Immigration has rapidly increased, and as numerous immigrants flooded into Europe, separate neighbourhoods were built, which led to segregation and consolidation of income inequality.
This study is aimed at analysing the boom of Stockholm’s housing market and its effect on the residents and the new migrants. This dissertation investigates the cause and effects of the socioeconomic polarization in the urban residential areas in Stockholm. The accumulated data covers the urban sprawl and segregation that started taking place in the 2000s.
In this thesis starts from analysing the recent development of Stockholm’s urban areas, which a prime example of how the system and legislation impacted the urban development in other European cities as well is expected to provide by this dissertation. Urban sprawl and segregation are the primary focus of this analysis. Then this dissertation is analysed by the correlation between urban sprawl and segregation regarding their impact on urban development with an interdisciplinary method including economic, social, and cultural approaches.
Finally, how the increased housing prices have led to the segregation and urban sprawl of the city is showed by this dissertation. However, the data that was used for the analysis was garnered on the municipal level, so this analysis might not be able to provide a full explanation of the situation on the provincial level. Nevertheless, the data sets that this dissertation used in the analysis offer a clearer illustration of the situation, pointing out the abrupt changes that are going on in every municipality of Stockholm.
