종로서적과 개발연대 서점산업 문화사 - 1960~70년대 종로 서점가의 재편과 종로서적센터의 성장 = The Industrial and Cultural History of Jongno Book Center During the UN Development Decade: The Reorganization of Jongno’s Bookstore Streets and the Growth of Jongno Book Center in the 1960s and 1970s

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글의 목적은 개발연대로 지칭되던 1960~70년대 한국의 서점산업과 출판 유통 체제가 재구조화되는 과정을 살펴보는 것이다. 도서 생산과 유통의 거점이었던 서울 종로와 그 주변을 중심으로 한 출판시장의 변천과 서점산업 구조의 난맥상, 그리고 이를 배경으로 등장한 종로서적센터(1963~1977)의 형성사를 논의해보려는 것이다. 개발연대는 전 세계적으로 도서와 국가 발전의 관계가 새로이 모색되던 시기였다. 출판과 서점을 통한 책의 원활한 유통이 국가적 차원에서 중요한 문제로 대두되었다. 주지하듯 1960년대부터 한국의 출판 및 서점산업은 도서 유통 질서의 혼란 속에서 급격한 성장과 재구조화 과정을 겪는다. 이러한 상황에서 1963년에 설립된 종로서적센터는 세련된 매장을 갖추고 새로운 경영 방식을 도입한 현대적인 신간서점이었다. 중소형 서점이었던 종로서적센터가 현대화되고 대형 서점으로 성장해가는 과정은 한국 출판·서점산업의 발전 과정과 궤를 함께한다. 종로서적센터의 현대화는 매장 공간의 현대화만을 가리키는 것이 아니다. 이 서점은 다양한 문화 사업과 고객 서비스 기법을 시도함으로써 서울의 출판 유통과 문화 향유의 중심지로 기능했다. 또한 이 서점은 외서(外書) 전담 부서와 매장을 설치해 해외의 선진적인 지식과 문화 수입에도 앞장서기도 했다. 종로서적센터는 독서문화 발전과 서점 경영 혁신을 위해 새롭고 다채로운 문화 사업과 제도를 도입함으로써 서울의 대표적인 대형 서점이 되었고, 종로의 서점 현대화와 기업화를 선도했다. 종로서적센터를 포함한 종로 서점가의 성장과 변화는 도시의 일상문화와 출판·독서문화의 창출, 지식의 유통과 네트워크 확장 등 한국 지성사 및 문화사의 변동과 밀접한 관계를 맺고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this article is to examine the restructuring of South Korea’s bookstore industry and publishing distribution system in the 1960s and 1970s, which was referred to as the UN Development Decade. In other words, I would like to discuss the changes in the publishing market around Jongno, Seoul, which was a hub for book production and distribution, the turmoil in the structure of the bookstore industry, and the history of the Jongno Book Center (1963~1977). The UN Development Decade was a time when the relationship between books and national development was newly formed around the world. The distribution of books through bookstores has emerged as an important issue at the national level. As is well known, since the 1960s, Korea’s publishing and bookstore industry has undergone rapid growth and restructuring amid the confusion in the book distribution order. Under these circumstances, the Jongno Book Center, established in 1963, was a new book store equipped with modern facilities and introduced a new management method. The process of modernizing the Jongno Book Center, which used to be a small and medium-sized bookstore, and growing into a large bookstore is in line with the development process of the Korean publishing and bookstore industry. The modernization of Jongno Book Center does not only refer to the modernization of it’s interior space. This bookstore has functioned as the center of a publishing distribution and a cultural space in Seoul by attempting various cultural businesses and customer services. In addition, the bookstore has set up a department and store for importing and selling foreign books to take the lead in learning advanced knowledge and culture from abroad. The Jongno Book Center became a major bookstore in Seoul by introducing new and diverse cultural projects and systems to develop reading culture and innovate bookstore management, and led Jongno’s bookstore to modernization. The growth and change of Jongno Book Center and Jongno’ bookstore streets were closely related to changes in Korean intellectual history and cultural history, such as the creation of daily culture, publishing and reading culture, and the distribution of knowledge and network expansion.
