지체부자유 학교의 음악교과에 관한 영역별 운영 실태 분석 = An Analysis on the Current Status of the Teaching Areas and Operation of the Music Education Curriculum at School for the Students with Disabilities

The purpose of this study is to find out the current status of teaching areas and operation of the music education curriculum at schools for physically handicapped students.
For this purpose, a research was conducted by means of questionnaire to a group of 44 teachers who are currently involved in music education for physically handicapped students at 35 different schools throughout Korea. The analysis of the operational status of music education curriculum was conducted by using the statistical program of SPSS/PC12.0_K, while the method of t-test, one way analysis of variance (ANOVA), cross classification, and regression analysis (variable selection) was used in finding out the music teaching status and the responses of the students who had been taught music classes according to the curriculum. Following analysis as a conclusion is suggested for further research and discussion:
First, one of the findings was that those schools located in big urban cites turned out to be in relatively better environment of music education, while the more class hours for music education were allocated, the greater satisfaction the students acquired.
Second, the operational analysis of the current music education curriculum has revealed that most of singing activities was conducted by following the teacher's voice in group rather than by individual lesson, while teaching classes on how to play musical instruments were conducted by using the rhythm instruments and individual lessons. Music appreciation classes were conducted by mainly using the digital video discs (DVDs) and creative activities of music composition were done to train musical creativity by modulating or adjusting the music speed.
As to the difficulties confronted during the classroom teaching activities, the most salient problems were teaching students how to produce correct pronunciation in classes of singing activities, and lack of free movement of fingers and hands for classes of playing musical instruments. Regarding the music appreciation classes, students' lack of attention was a main hindrance.
Out of the above mentioned research findings, following points are suggested to be considered for future plan on how to improve the current music education curriculum and teaching activities at schools for physically handicapped students.
First, current trend shows an increasing severity and multiplicity of students' handicaps. Due to this new trend, the music education facilities need to be improved to a great extent so that they can meet such student's need. Further research is required, and appropriate musical instruments and supplementary musical appliances are in need of sufficient supply in order to meet the students' new needs.
Second, this study is an analytical research on the current status and operation of music education curriculum and music classroom teachings. Further study on how to improve it in each of music teaching areas is required.
