A Basic Study on the Development of the Standards for the Linked Curriculum between Kindergarten and Elementary School 1st and 2nd grade

This study aims to provide the preliminary data for articulation curriculum by developing the guideline for the linking curriculum of the kindergartens and first - second graders of elementary schools, considering the suitability of the educational field based on the current general curriculum of kindergartens and elementary schools.

In order to achieve these study objectives, the research questions were set as follows;

What’s the status of developing the guideline for the articulation curriculum of kindergartens and first-second graders of elementary schools?

First, what’s the status of developing the draft guideline?
Second, what’s the status of developing the amended guideline?
Third, what’s the status of developing the final guideline?

In order to carry out the above research questions, literature review, survey research, and development research were applied. The guideline for the articulation curriculum of kindergarten and first-second graders of elementary schools were developed through the procedures of draft, amendment, and final plan using these methods.

First, the main procedures and results of the draft guideline for the articulation curriculum of kindergartens and first-second graders of elementary schools are as follows;

The draft guideline was created by extracting the parts related to the overlap or the parts related articulation curriculum from the current generals of kindergartens and primary education curriculum, in consideration of the developmental〮 social〮 educational aspects of children aged 3-7. Then, the foundation for the draft was in place by developing the standards and principles that could be the basis for the articulation curriculum. In particular, the survey was conducted for in-service teachers and experts in kindergartens and elementary schools, by developing a questionnaire about the suitability of the guideline for the curriculum linking kindergartens and elementary schools. For the data collection, of the 255 questionnaires distributed, 225 were collected and among them, 7 missing or unfaithful questionnaires were excluded, and a total of 218 were statistically processed with the SPSS 20.0. Based on the results, the draft guideline for the articulation curriculum of kindergartens and elementary schools was developed.

The results of the draft established the basic form and contents of developing the guideline, by suggesting the standards, principles that are the theoretical basis for the organization or details of the articulation curriculum of kindergartens and elementary schools, and representing the methods and procedures to develop such guideline. In addition, the survey was conducted for in-service teachers and experts in kindergartens and elementary schools, and the results were reflected to ensure the feasibility, practicality, efficiency, and suitability of developing the draft guideline in the educational arena.

Second, the main procedures and results of the amended guideline are as follows;

The procedures of the amendment were revised and supplemented through the first and second stages of verification of in-service teachers and experts in kindergartens and elementary schools from April 27, 2020 to May 10, 2020.

The amendment was simplified by considering the basic document format and readability as a whole, and revised and supplemented, highlighting important parts. Especially, the nature and necessity of the format were presented separately and the objectives were set out together with the exemplary model of children by simplifying the overlapping contents of the human character and the goal in the draft. In addition, the performance assessment, which is the paragraph of the national level in the curriculum support, was deleted due to controversy over the appropriateness of the evaluation.

Third, the main procedures and results of the final guideline are as follows;

The final guideline for the articulation curriculum of kindergartens and first-second graders of elementary schools, was developed through the steps of possible agenda->draft->amendment->final guideline.

The results of the final guideline for the articulation curriculum of kindergartens and first-second graders of elementary schools, are as follows;
First, the guideline with practicality and validity based on the systematic and generalized outline of kindergarten and elementary school curriculum were developed, by faithfully reflecting the current curriculum, in order to reduce the confusion and burden of the educational spot.
Second, based on the participation and opinions of in-service teachers and experts in kindergartens and elementary schools, the guideline that reflected the suitability, closeness, and efficiency of the educational spot, were developed.
Third, it provided the harmonious and efficient, high-quality basic data for the articulation curriculum of kindergartens and elementary schools, considering the developmental, social and educational aspects of the children aged 3-7.
Therefore, this study is meaningful that the guideline will serve as a guiding star of the education that guides children to enter the Garden of Light with endless adventure beyond the new horizon (Lee Won-hyung, Rae-young Joe, 2003) instead of doing hard works.

In this context, it is considered that the linkage between kindergartens and elementary schools should be done in such a way that each small rain drop gathers and flows naturally from the river to the sea(Oh In-hee, 2013).
