Singapore provides their children at least ten years of general education, six years in primary school and four years in secondary school. After secondary schooling, student can go on to a junior college if he as academically inclined. If he is good at skills, he can join a technical or commercial institute first and then go on to polytechnic, or go directly to a polytechnic.
Before 1974, Civic, Geography and History were taught as separate subjects in the primary curriculum. From 1974 onwards, Geography and History were phased out and replaced by a new subject, Education for Living(EFL). EFL incorporated Geography, History and Civics. It was aimed at responsible citizenship, the inculcation of moral things as well as Singapores historical background and geographical environment. Later EFL was divided into two subjects, Social Studies and Moral Education. While Moral Education concentrates on the inculcation on moral values, the objective of Social Studies is to teach geographical and historical concept rather than Asian values or morals.
The teaching of Social Studies was extended to pupils in the lower primary levels(Primary 1-3) from the year 2000, to provide another avenue for the implementation of National Education (NE). At the lower primary levels, the syllabus components introduce pupils to the world beginning with the school, and extending to the neighborhood and society. At the upper primary levels, the syllabus had been revised to provide a wider coverage of Singapores post-war history, the road to nationhood and the nations achievements since independence. NE messages are infused in the syllabus wherever possible. For instance, a lesson on the Japanese Occupation of Singapore would help the pupils realize the importance of defense and national service. Lessons in geography would bring about an awareness of the physical constraints of space so that the pupils understand how Singapore has efficiently used land for housing, industry and recreation. On the issue of water, pupils would learn of the nations plans to ensure sufficiency in this precious resource and not to waste it.
Geography and History have been regarded as common subject in the secondary level owing to the British rule, on the other hand Social Studies are only taught for the Technical course students. Geography and History in national syllabus are included as humanities and academic level of then of very high compared with those of us. Especially, Geography in secondary school looks like a reduced size edition of University levels and emphasized the system of a discipline. Together with the system of a discipline, the concept of the relationship between human and environment plays a major role in composing Geography Syllabus.
The important of NE as part of nation building has made it imperative to review and revise the Geography and History syllabus to meet the needs of Singapore. In addition, social demands for higher-order an critical thinking are increasing to approach problems creatively and to make decision based on sound judgement. For that reason, syllabus of Geography and History emphasized the thinking and information technology(IT) skill to meet the changing demands of the information age. Among them, NE affects Geography and History syllabus in various ways like primary Social Studies. Fro example, modern history, especially related to Japanese invasion and post-war year leading to self-government, is more emphasized than ancient one. And understanding of Singapores strategic vulnerabilities and constraints is also treated importantly in geography.
