무라야마 지준(村山智順)의 1927년 저서『조선인의 사상과 성격(朝鮮人の思想と性格)』에 나타난 불교 관련 내용에 대한 비판적 재고 = A Critical Review of Buddhist-Related Content in Murayama Jizun's 1927 Book Thoughts and Characteristics of Koreans

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 조선총독부 촉탁이었던 무라야마 지준이 편집한 1927년『조선인의 사상과 성격』에 나타난 조선인의 정체성, 특히 조선불교에 대해서 그가 어떻게 왜곡해서 표현했는지 비판적 시각으로 재고하기 위함이다. 이 책에서 무라야마 지준은 조선인의 성격을 20가지로 분류하면서 부정적인 견해를 부각시켰고, 나아가 조선불교를 ‘걸식(乞食) 불교’라고 비하하기까지 하였다.
이러한 그의 평가 이면에는 한반도 토착 종교의 정체성을 왜곡시켜서 그들의 식민통치의 정당성을 주장하려는 의도에서 비롯되었음은 자명하다. 불행히도 한 세기 전 일본인들이 한반도를 바라보았던 비뚤어진 시각은 단순한 과거에 존재했던 인식의 문제가 아니라, 오늘날 ‘조선총독부 건물 철거’, ‘한일호감도 조사 인식차’, ‘사도 광산의 유네스코 등재’, ‘위안부 부정과 소녀상 철거’ 문제 등에서도 여전히 나타나고 있는 현재 진행형의 인식이다.
이에 본고에서 무라야마 지준이 폄하한 조선불교에 대한 인식이 역사적 사실과 전혀 부합하지 않음을 밝히면서, 조선불교가 정치적·사회적 역할을 나름대로 충실히 했음과 특히 조선 후기 불교 미술의 발전도 새삼 주목할 필요가 있었다. 결론적으로 말해 이 연구는 “역사는 과거와 현재, 그리고 미래의 끊임없는 대화”라는 E. H 카의 교훈을 반면교사 삼아, 일본의 거듭된 역사 왜곡과 날조를 바로잡을 수 있는 작은 밑돌의 연구 성과가 될 것으로 기대한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to analyze how Murayama Jizun, a consultant for the Government- General of Korea during the Japanese colonial period (1920-1930s), distorted the identity of Koreans through a biased evaluation of Korean Buddhism in his book Thoughts and Character of Koreans. Murayama Jizun categorized Koreans into 20 personality traits, emphasizing negative characteristics, and disparaged Korean Buddhism as a “begging Buddhism.” Although he claimed that Korean Buddhism was in decline, this evaluation is inconsistent with historical facts. This research demonstrates that Korean Buddhism was deeply rooted in the lives of the people and played a significant role in national defense and the moral character of the population, as shown through examples of patriotic Buddhism. Through this study, we critically examine how Murayama Jizun's distorted assessment served to justify colonial rule by misrepresenting the identity of Koreans.
This research reveals that Murayama Jizun's evaluation of Korean Buddhism in Thoughts and Character of Koreansdoes not align with historical facts. Moreover, it confirms that Korean Buddhism had significant political and social roles. The study also highlights the development of Buddhist art during the late Joseon period. The skewed perspectives that Japanese held towards Korea over a century ago are not merely issues of the past but continue to show a lack of historical reflection and repentance today. Such perspectives still surface in contemporary debates like the demolition of the Government-General building, differences in the results of the “Korea-Japan favorability” surveys, and the “Sado Mine” controversy.
In this paper, I critically examine Murayama Jizun's distorted views, re-evaluate the social and political significance of Korean Buddhism, and scrutinize historical distortions while reconsidering the cultural and religious meaning of Korean Buddhism. Furthermore, I point out that Japan's distorted historical perception persists in the present and emphasize the need for Japan's historical reflection and repentance. I hope that this research contributes a new perspective to this field of study.
