Under the influence of Confucianism, the men's and women's living rooms in the Korean house were separated. These two rooms were called Sarangbang and Anbang. They were heated with the special heating system called On-dol, where they could sit on the floor itself.
The anbang is women's living room where only women and close relatives were allowed to enter, and all men, except the husband and immediate family members were prohibited.
Women of the Yi Dynasty were entirely subordinated to men, and their sole obligation was to take care of the family life (clothes, food and shelter). Consequently, any kind of Study or hobbies were not permitted at all.
As for furniture, all they had in the Anbang were various closets for clothes and bedding, boxes, cases, sewing baskets and cosmetic cases.
The Sarangbang, the men's living room, however, was the place where the men would greet visitors, do research and enjoy their hobbies. Furniture consisted of a stationary chest, writing table, book cases, cigarette box, and music instruments.
The Kitchen was the most neglected place in the house with various pieces of furniture such as a rice box, cupboard, and dining table, which were placed in the cooking room or eating room.
The reason that most furniture of the Yi Dynasty was made of wood, was that they had a plentiful supply of wood, so they could easily obtain tit to make things at home.
Some splendid furniture made with colored borne work or lacquer were used in some high class Anbang rooms, but because of the frugal concept of Confucianism, simple furniture made of wood or bamboo material were developed. Consequently, the features of most furniture were very natural anes because of the use of natural material. Especially, the frugal furniture of the Sarangbang was highly estimate for the wood patterns.
The furniture of this age was made with special technics such as jointing and pasting without using nails. Nails were only used for metal decorating work.
Most metal work or decorative patterns used were animals: butterfly, bat, turtle, hold fish, dragon, phoenix or bird. Also plant patterns were used: plum, orchid, chrysanthemum, bamboo or acanthus. These were simple patterns which could be easily found in their daily life.
The furniture of the Yi Dynasty was mostly hand-made by special order. Therefore, some shapes or sizes were rare, and there were many various kinds.
Especially, the Yi Dynasty people's high sense of appreciation of beauty was the important essence for mass production of the pleasantly balanced furniture of this time.
