Automation technology for safety, productivity and quality improvement in manufacturing is rapidly developing as the industrial society is advanced. However, automation has not left the initial stage in the construction industry which is an industry avoided because of a poor work environment. In particular, the safety and maintenance of facilities in the construction industry is a field that requires the most changes as facilities deteriorate but the present still depends only on man power. Therefore, automation of safety inspection is urgently required to improve the working environment conditions for inspection personnel and to secure the reliability of inspection results.
Even until now, Safety inspection activities to investigate damage to structures and measure the extent of damage depend largely on visual inspection. For that reason, the reliability and precision of measurement results may be lowered due to the intervention of the inspector's subjective judgment in the safety inspection activities of facilities that depend on manpower. In particular, this is more pronounced for safety inspection activities in an environment where access is difficult.
Recently, safety inspection activities have become the needs for changes that relied on existing manpower is emerging to improve this trend.
In this study, digital image processing technology which is one of the smart maintenance methods developing in recent years was combined with a smartphone to develop a technology that can analyze damage to facilities and the documentable system was proposed on damage based on objective data acquisition and quantification.
The planar projection transformation was applied as a method of correcting image distortion due to the distance from the object to be photographed and the angle of the photograph in image processing technology. As a result of analyzing the damage scale on the image corrected by this conversion method, it was confirmed that the accuracy of the damage scale measurement could be obtained within the target value of 5.0mm and 0.005㎡.
In addition, in order to verify the accuracy of image processing and analysis of the web program equipped with the self-developed system, the visual survey compared with survey results calculated through image analysis. As a result, the coefficient of variation of crack length in the structure decreased from 4.77∼7.42% to 0.09∼0.17% and the damaged area decreased from 8.64% to 0.81% in improved accuracy more than 10 times.
The brief report that can be written within 10 minutes to verify the effect of time reduction in comparing the report creation time by handwriting and the result report of the developed system to verify the effect of time reduction through automatic report generation. As a result of the review, it was confirmed that facility status was a shortening effect of up to 40 seconds (average 5.5 seconds) and the damage table was up to 50 seconds (average 2 seconds) and the exterior survey photo album was up to 255 seconds (average 231 seconds).
It was analyzed that the shortening time of one report was shortened by up to 265 seconds (average 238.5 seconds). Considering that dozens or hundreds of damages are investigated in safety inspections in the general safety inspections, the developed system was found to be very effective in facility safety inspections.
In this way, image analysis will provide objective data acquisition and quantification, reliable information about the damage that needs investigation, managing the time history of damage through accumulated data, reducing analysis and preparation time through report automation.
Now that interest in the safety and maintenance of facilities is increasing, digital image processing technology and automatic report generation system have been developed to efficiently and economically transform facility exterior surveys that rely on the naked eye. It is expected to contribute to laying the foundation for smart maintenance technology in the field of safety diagnosis.
