As the use of technology in the classroom expands, and blended or fully online learning becomes the norm, the number of special education students enrolling in these programs continues to increase at a rapid rate. The growing interest in these modes of learning has resulted in stakeholders’ needing to determine the effectiveness of such programs on the education of the at-risk/special education populations. The problem studied was special education students in a blended learning environment have been found to struggle with the online aspects of blended learning; consequently, their academic performance is impeded. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to gain insight into the perceptions and experiences of special education graduates of a blended learning alternative high school in order to identify and understand how such perceptions and experiences affected the graduates’ academic achievement. Data was collected using a semi-structured interview guide. The study participants were special education students who recently graduated from an alternative, blended learning school. Findings from the study indicated that the students had positive experiences and benefitted from the blended learning program. However, the data also showed that the students’ experiences were influenced by the overall positive culture of the school, demonstrating that relationships are important in student learning. Data from the study contributed to existing literature on that population as well as on the topic of technology-based learning. Future research should expand to investigate blended learning and its effect on both special education students and at-risk students at the K-12 level and in alternative high schools.
