“Nam-Manchu” was another name of the tip of the Liaodong peninsula where Japan obtained from Russia after the Russo-Japanese war. Japan established a railroad company based on the peninsula named as Mantetsu in order to expand their imperial power towards the northern continent. After the Manchurian incident(1931) intentionally operated by and furthermore Manchukuo manipulated by the Kantogun(Japanese army), Japanese academic circles started simultaneously to use the concept of “Manmo” as a newly expanded area created by the government of Imperial Japan. A laboratory of religious/sociology studies led by Profs. Akamatsu Chijo and Akiba Takashi and anatomy laboratory led by Prof. Imamura Yutaka under Keijo Imperial University in the colonial Korea had a role of promulgating the so-called “Manmo ethnology”. At the same time, there were many universities and institutes in the mainland Japan started to cooperate to pioneer the various disciplinary researches at the Manmo area. The ethnic problem in Manchukuo was as a matter of fact one of the key issues to create the new state in the area and the political slogan of “Cooperation and Harmony among the Five Ethnic Groups” was the most serious political campaign in the newly established state under the Kantogun. There was a relatively small group of population named as the Orochon around Amur river in the northern Manchuria and this group was utilized for spying activity against the Soviet Union to operate strategic intelligence by the special agent(Tokumukikan) of the military intelligence under the Kantogun.
Scholars working in the Orochon area must cooperate with the special agent because of the area with the military sensitivity. This paper examines the cooperative relationship between scholars and special agent in the Orochon area in order to “understand” the Orochon society. This author would like to call the cooperative activity as “Scholar-Agent Cooperation” to understand the Orochon people in Manmo. There was especially a special agent named Yoshioka Yoshito who did actually cooperate with three anthropologists. Photos kept by Izumi Tetsuo who was the head of the special agency in the area explain clearly Yoshioka and his associates. Three Japanese anthropologists were Prof. Akiba Takashi(later became a professor at Aichi University) from Keijo Imperial University, Dr. Imanishi Kinji(later professor at Kyoto University) employed as a researcher at Ritsumeikan University, and Prof. Oyama Hikoichi(later professor at Kagoshima University) at Kenkoku University. This paper tries to uncover the specific relationship between those scholars and the agent in terms of field research on the Orochon people, Without checking their relationship especially on the intelligence activity, one cannot escape from mistaking to figure out the real meaning of the content of those scholars’ publications. Prof. Duara, history department of Chicago University, could, for example, be the case of misunderstanding to read Akiba’s publications because he did not catch up the special relationship between Akiba as a scholar and Yoshioka as an agent. He did not even mention the name of Yoshioka as an agent. It should not be forgotten there might be more problems like a Duara case on Manmo researches among publications from Kenkoku University and so on.
