The emergence of dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM) technology is one of the most recent and important phenomena in the development of fiber optic transmission technology. From being deployed in the long-haul transoceanic and terrestrial networks, DWDM technology now breaks into the metropolitan area and, eventually, in the access networks using hybrid architectures of fiber and coaxial media. In fact, the capacity of systems will grow as technologies advance that allow closer spacing, and therefore higher numbers, of wavelengths. In that context, the study on demultiplexer, one of the keys components of the DWDM system, has been received much interest.
This dissertation is dedicated to analyze, design, and fabricate volume holographic gratings for optical demultiplexers. The reasons for the interest in studying the demultiplexer using holographic grating lie in the properties of this demultiplexer: simple structure, and low cost. The basic concept is that each wavelength is diffracted by the grating at a different angle. A convergent lens will focus those diffracted beams into a fiber array for many channels. Photopolymer material HRF-150-38 and HRF-150-100 are chosen for recording grating because they have high sensitivity, high resolution, long shelf life, and easy dry processing. The uniform grating, the chirped grating, and the apodized grating are recorded with the help of knowing the characteristics of the material including the dependence of the diffraction efficiency on the total intensity and the beam intensity modulation.
In this dissertation, the scalar theories describing the interaction of wave with the grating medium are discussed. Designing parameters of a demultiplexer such as the channel number, the uniformity, the insertion loss, and the spatial distance is based on these theories’ results. From that, a demonstration of a holographic optical demultiplexer based on the cascaded volume holographic gratings is presented. By serially adding the second holographic grating, which has different grating period, slant angle, and center wavelength compared to those of the first grating, the operating wavelength range of the optical demultiplexer could be expanded, and therefore, the number of channels of the holographic demultiplexer is increased by twice. As a result of the experiment, a 0.4-nm-spaced 130-channel demultiplexer with the channel uniformity of 3.5 dB, the 3dB-bandwidth of 0.12 nm, and the channel crosstalk of -20 dB is experimentally achieved.
A demultiplexer with a function of controlling spatial distance based on a chirped volume holographic grating is introduced. The chirped grating is recorded by illuminating a photopolymer film under the interference of convergent and divergent beams. The theoretical and experimental results show that the position of the focused points of the diffracted beam at the readout stage depends on the distance between the grating and the output lens. This characteristic can be utilized to control the channel spacing and the spatial distance in the demultiplexer.
Finally, apodization technique in photopolymer is discussed. Using the characteristic that after pre-exposure process, the growing of the diffraction efficiency is linear to the beam intensity, an apodized grating by fixed-laser beams is recorded. A Gaussian apodized grating is used as a demultiplexer. As a result, the crosstalk level between channels is reduced by 15 dB to -30 dB. In addition, a novel apodization technique using three beams to fabricate an apodized grating in photopolymer is proposed. An orthogonal-polarization beam used to control the saturated index modulation of the material is added during recording time. As a result of the experiment, apodized gratings with uniform, inverse Gaussian, and triangular profiles are fabricated successfully in the HRF-150-38 photopolymer.
