This study aimed to illuminate the cultural and social aspects of the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period to the Three Kingdoms Period in eastern Jeollanam-do by examining the characteristics and developmental patterns of settlements in each period and region, thereby analyzing the social structure and nature evident in the settlement data. The study comprehensively investigated various features, changes, and characteristics of residential culture by dividing eastern Jeollanam-do into seven regions and four periods.
The development of settlements in eastern Jeollanam-do during the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period to the Three Kingdoms Period can be divided into four periods.
Period I represents the formative period of settlements, corresponding to the 1st century to the late 2nd century AD. Settlements were established along the coast, with ditch-enclosed and shell mound settlements found in key locations along coastal transportation routes. These settlements developed into long-term central settlements with the arrangement of constituent facilities such as ditch enclosures, pits, ritual facilities, and tombs. After a transitional phase in dwelling styles, circular-shaped dwellings and standardized hearth structures emerged. This period is characterized by the simple use of hard plain pottery, including degraded pottery with triangular clay band rims and hard plain pottery.
Period II, spanning from the late 2nd or early 3rd century to the mid-4th century AD, marks the growth of settlements and the diversification of residential culture. New settlements formed along coastlines and waterways, increasing in number and size, with the emergence of large-scale settlements. These large settlements featured structures like above-ground buildings and kilns, and variations in dwelling and community hierarchy became apparent. Eastern and western regions showed distinct dwelling types, with circular forms in the east and rectangular forms in the west, each developing unique structural characteristics. During this period, the influence of Honam's western region's residential culture became evident in the western part of the eastern region, notably with the appearance of Four-pillar-type Dwellings, although they did not become prevalent. Hard plain pottery and paddled pottery coexisted, with paddled pottery gradually becoming established. By the end of this period, pottery from the Gaya region also appeared.
Period III, from the late 4th century to the early 5th century AD, witnessed a peak in the number of settlements and dwellings. Population growth and settlement diversification intensified across all areas, with a pronounced trend of settlement formation and expansion. Large and medium-sized settlements, in particular, exhibited increased complexity, featuring ditch enclosures, tombs, above-ground buildings, and kilns. While rectangular dwellings replaced circular ones in the western region, circular dwellings persisted in the east. Notably, the Seomjin River middle basin and Yeosu Peninsula areas showed a higher proportion of rectangular dwellings. Standardized pottery was used throughout the region, and increased interaction led to the discovery of artifacts from western Honam, the Gaya region, and Japan.
Period IV, spanning the mid-5th century to the early 6th century AD, is marked by changes in the overall material culture of settlements and an increase in external influences. The number of settlements declined, and their distribution range contracted. Despite this, settlements of all sizes displayed heightened complexity with diverse constituent features, including specialized pottery production and iron production facilities, tombs, and ritual sites. The increase in extra-large and large dwellings further emphasized the differentiation and hierarchy within settlements and dwelling clusters. Most dwelling structures transitioned to rectangular forms with hearth-style fireplaces. Although Four-pillar-type Dwellings increased, they still did not dominate. Pottery underwent various changes in shape and design, and foreign artifacts became more prevalent. Pottery from western Honam and the Sogaya region became more common, with sporadic discoveries of Japanese artifacts. Furthermore, around the 6th century AD, pottery from the Daegaya region appeared, with imitations also being produced, primarily in the Seomjin River middle basin and Suncheon Bay areas. This period, characterized by external influences and subsequent changes, reflects the dynamic social landscape of the eastern region before its incorporation into the Baekje kingdom.
Examining the characteristics of settlements by region reveals the following:
Settlements in the Seomjin River middle basin were situated on flat terrain in Periods I, II, and IV, while Period III saw settlements located on hilly terrain. These settlements reached their peak during Periods II and III, but their duration was generally short-lived, lasting only 1-2 periods. Oval-shaped dwellings were predominant, with rectangular dwellings and Four-pillar-type Dwellings appearing in Period III. In Period IV, small settlements related to the Daegaya region emerged.
In the Gwangyang Bay area, large and long-lasting settlements concentrated along the Dongcheon and Seocheon water systems in the western region. In contrast, the hilly settlements in the eastern region were mostly small and short-lived. Settlements along the Dongcheon water system grew from Period II onwards, leading to a maximized concentration of population in medium to large-sized settlements during Periods III and IV. Oval-shaped dwellings were the main type, eventually replaced by rectangular forms in Period IV. Gaya pottery became frequent from the late Period II, and Sogaya, Silla, and Japanese pottery were found in Periods III and IV. The area had relatively active exchanges with the Gaya region and showed similarities to the western Gyeongsangnam-do region in the persistence of oval-shaped dwellings and hard plain pottery.
Settlements in the Boseong River basin are concentrated in the upper reaches during Period II and the middle reaches during Period III. Large settlements in Periods II and III show high dwelling density and the formation of production facilities and related dwelling clusters. A shift to rectangular dwellings occurs from Period II, and Four-pillar-type Dwellings appear, exhibiting many similarities to the residential structures and pottery styles of western Honam.
Settlements in the Deungnyang Bay area are not numerous. Period I is characterized by ditch-enclosed settlements and shell mound settlements, while Period III sees small settlements distributed around a central settlement. The central settlement established in Period I continues to exist until Period IV. Notably, in Period III, interaction with the Gaya region is evident from excavated artifacts and burial data, and in Period IV, specialized pottery production settlements emerge. Rectangular dwellings are the predominant housing type.
Settlements on the Goheung Peninsula are few in number and distributed in the hilly areas of the southwestern region facing the sea. This area shows the earliest transition to rectangular dwellings and the appearance of Four-pillar-type Dwellings. Due to its geographical location along the Baekje-Gaya maritime trade route, various external elements are observed in its material culture.
Based on the observed periodization and regional development and characteristics, the nature of the settlements can be summarized as follows:
The circular and rectangular dwelling cultures of eastern Jeollanam-do exhibit both commonalities and differences with neighboring regions, forming a "cultural transition zone." This residential cultural pattern suggests that the eastern region was not politically or socially integrated. While circular dwelling structures show similarities to those in western Gyeongsangnam-do, the distinct artifact assemblages of each region indicate they should be classified as separate "oval dwelling distribution zones." The oval dwelling culture of the eastern region should be considered a unique characteristic of this area. Rectangular dwelling culture, influenced by western Honam, entered the western part of the eastern region and developed with its own distinct features. However, the lack of widespread adoption of new dwelling structures suggests a less active response and acceptance of new cultural elements.
The ancient settlements in eastern Jeollanam-do appear to have formed a regional community, with a central settlement connected to numerous ordinary settlements, establishing reciprocal and interdependent relationships. While social hierarchy existed, it seems that no specific power controlled the entire settlement or regional community, and settlements maintained relatively horizontal relationships. Differences in status between settlements or regional communities appear to have been based on economic power, with no clear evidence of political or social stratification. The process of social stratification and integration in ancient eastern Jeollanam-do seems to have been gradual.
Finally, an examination of artifacts reveals patterns of exchange. Artifacts from Gaya, Silla, Japan, and Baekje have been found, mostly believed to have been introduced through maritime trade routes. However, exchanges with Daegaya appear to have occurred through inland routes.
Artifacts indicative of external exchanges are primarily Gaya pottery, excavated from coastal areas starting in the late Period II. The regions involved in these exchanges and the central areas of exchange within the eastern region changed over time. Interaction with the Gaya region mainly occurred through sea routes and coastal transportation routes, centering on coastal areas. This process also led to the inflow of Japanese artifacts. On the other hand, the Seomjin River middle basin and the Boseong River basin are characterized by a scarcity of Gaya artifacts, indicating relatively less active external exchanges compared to coastal areas. These external exchanges appear to have been one of the factors influencing the formation, development, and decline of settlements in eastern Jeollanam-do.
