The "Shakespeare of today" is one of the biggest cultural context and contents utilizable not only to the traditional academic discipline but to social or even natural sciences in many forms. This paper aims to introduce some of the representative British and American "Prison Shakespeare Programs," outlining their rationale, methodology and success so to better judge how to apply them in the Korean correctional institutional setting, vis-à-vis prisoners and prison administrators in Korea.
As early as the 17th century, travel records show us that some prisoners in a boat to the New Continent staged Hamlet. Since the 1970s, Great Britain and the United Stated developed various Shakespeare programs in prison. In England, the government and the Royal Shakespeare Company have assisted professional directors and college professors for the education and transformation of prison inmates, especially for mentally-disordered people housed in HMP Broadmoor and HMP Dartmoor, two representative prisons in England. With these prison programs, the London Shakespeare Workshop has played a big role in the betterment of inmates, providing a variety of Shakespeare performances through which youths could build up a will to change their life. With these educational programs, young people, both drama students and prison inmates, could be given chances to express their creative ideas, to train their performing skills and to thereby (re)habilitate their true self. The United States has also seen youth programs similar to these operating, e.g., resulting from the keen interest of First Lady Laura Bush and the U.S. Justice Department, multiple such Shakespearian programs for young people detained in prison have appeared.
Within adult inmate programs, America provides several good relevant examples: "Shakespeare behind Bars" (SBB) in the Luther Luckett Correctional Complex in Kentucky, "Changing Lives Through Literature" in the Framingham Women's Prison in Massachusetts, "Prison Performing Arts" (PPA) in the Eastern Correctional Center and the Northeastern Correctional Center in Missouri, "Shakespeare in the Secured Housing Unit" (SHU) in the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility, Indiana, and "the Theater of the Oppressed" in Racine Correctional Institute in Milwaukee.
Program directors have reported multiple of positive effects of these prison Shakespeare programs in contributing to the inmates' change or transformation. Nevertheless, for a successful adaptation of these programs to the correctional institutes in Korea to occur, we need to carefully consider the typical conditions present in the Korean correctional institutes. Some questions, both conceptual and practical, that could be posed might be: Is Shakespeare the only playwright that can be performed in prison? Why only Shakespeare? What do we need for us to lead prison inmates to attend Shakespeare performances? How much do we deal with those subversive messages in some of Shakespeare’s plays? How can we vary different programs for prisoners, ranging from juvenile detainees to life-long prisoners? Is there no possibility of sexual harassment for those actors who play female characters in Shakespeare? How much financial support can we need for costume or stage props? And how can we cope with emergencies when trained inmates go out or are transferred to another prison? We need to seek to provide avenues for apt consideration of such issues and indicate productive future paths for the integration of such "Prison Shakespeare Programs" in Korea.
