민교협과 민주노조운동 : 연대와 협력의 10년 = 'Professors association for democratization' and democratic trade union movement ; 10 years of solidarity and cooperation

Korean society has experienced various changes during the 10 years after the upheaval of the June in 1987. 'Professors' association for democratization'(PAD) declared it's beginning at the end of the upheaval of the June, and formally established itself in the midst of worker's mass struggle of the July-August in 1987. During the last 10 years which was called as a transitional period toward democratization, PAD tried to carry out many tasks which were necessary for democratization of society and autonomy of university.
In the view point of democratization of society, one of the most remarkable changes during the last 10 years was the growth of democratic trade union movement. Many newly made democratic trade unions struggled to establish and defend their national center - Korean Federation of Trade Union(KFTU, 1990) and Korean Confederation of Trade Union(KCTU, 1995) - against the severe oppression and control from the state and capital. The general strike of 1997 which was led by KCTU showed the fact that workers are one of the main agencies of Korean society.
PAD has contributed to the growth of democratic trade union movement directly and/or indirectly. Whenever the state and capital tried to control or oppress the independent and democratic trade union movement, PAD criticized the illegitimacy of such trials. PAD always insisted that it was the precondition for the development of Korean society to ensure the basic rights of workers to live and work humanly. The proclamations of PAD which had the symbolic image of intelligence and conscience of Korean society contributed to diffuse the legitimacy of democratic trade union movement.
PAD have filled the role of supporter of democratic trade union movement independently or in the alliance with other groups or bodies of movement for democratization. The most typical example was the activity of 'meeting to Patronize KFTU'. Because of the unlimited oppression from the state and capital, KFTU was pushed to end of the road. But other fractions of democratic trade union movement which had different perspectives about the course and process of the movement hesitated to support KFTU. In these circumstances the activities of 'meeting to Patronize KFTU' in which PAD had played an important role became the underlying and rehabilitating energy for KFTU financially as well as symbolically. Besides these activities of 'meeting to Patronize KFTU', PAD tried to do it's best to defend and support the democratic trade union movement at the critical points of the movement.
PAD as a group of professionals tried to development various policies which were necessary to solve the urgent problems of the movement. Especially in the conjuncture of labor law revision in 1996, the alternatives which the professors in PAD supposed in favour of workers affected the decision-making processes of government.
