The Buddhism under Japanese colony was the system of colony Buddhism supervised by the Order of Buddhist Temple(Sacha-lyeng ; 寺刹令), and so it cannot have a independent the Buddhist religious order(宗團). Although in 1910 years there was a union office consisted thirty head temples, it was never complete. The construction effort of th Buddhist religious order had been begun in earnest after the 1919 Independence Movement.
The construction effort of th Buddhist religious order was named the movement of the unification of Buddhism because it was possible to be assuming the unification of total Buddhism. The independent Buddhist religious order had been appeared the Chong Mu Won(총무원) which come out from a structure of the Buddhism reformation. But as the outer repression of the Japanese colony and the appearence of Kyo Mu Won(교무원) which had been made for protesting against Chong Mu Won by the pro-Japanese head priest of a Buddhist temple, Chong Mu Won did not achieve the expected results. More Chong Mu Won and Kyo Mu Won were opposed with the hegemony. In early 1924, the unification movement had been disappeared on joining them.
The movement of the unification of Buddhism had been pushed again through the Buddhist monk conference at January, 1929. This Buddhist monk conference did result in appearing Jong-Hun and Jong-Hoe, and so they had a monumental significance in the light of the independence and the unification movement of Buddhism. Jong-Hun which had a unification movemental significance had been disappeared around 1934. In this realistic situation, the general headquarter construction movement broke out. The essential point of this movement was to making the general headquarter be accepted by 31 headquarters completely and to giving the right of the personnel and the finance of total Buddhism to it.
The general headquarter construction movement be begun in earnest from 1937 had been pushed again under the sponsor of Japanese colony. In that times the concrete enterprise of the general headquarters construction was to constructing the main temple of the headquarters. That main temple construction was completed finally at October, 1938. After that time the Buddhism had pushed that it gave the main temple to the name in tradition of Korean Buddhism. It had been called the acquisition of temple name. It named to Taigo-Sa(태고사) according to the succession ceremony of Taigo, Bowo Guksa. This originated with the intention that we applied the previously type of Taigo-Sa located the Bukhan Mountain to the temple name located the new main temple at Jongro, Seoul. This proposal was agreed and decided at May, 1940. From that after, the name of the Buddhist religious order had undergone revision to Jokyejong(조계종) according to the logic that the religious name of Korean Buddhism would be amended in Buddhistic history and tradition. This amendment of the name was decided with reamending Japanese colony’s Sachal-lyeng enforcement regulation at April, 1941. Appearance of Jokyejong, Taigo-Sa was talked the completion of Buddhism unification movement. But to that process, there was sponsored and interferenced by Japanese colony.
Taigo-Sa which it had the history and the tradition like this was converted with the name of Jokye-Sa in 1955. So Jokye-Sa of present time is a product of Buddhism unification movement under Japanese colony.
