A Phenomenological Study of Rehabilitative Recreational Education for the Elderly with Long-term Care Level by Rehabilitative Recreational Education Therapist

The weakening of labor competitiveness and the extension of life expectancy due to the aging population have raised the perception that society should be responsible for the problem of supporting the elderly along with social changes. Elderly education is one of the important factors in order for the elderly to spend their old age with high life satisfaction. Education for seniors is not just passive support for the use of leisure time, but a process of achieving self-realization, which should ultimately present the direction of the role as an opportunity to improve the quality of life. The intervention of elderly professional education, such as rehabilitative recreational education, is needed so that the elderly can solve various difficulties, reduce psychological problems, and lead their lives with successful ego-integration
In response, this study aims to understand the experiences of rehabilitative recreational therapists who play a major role in the education of the elderly, which leads to an understanding of rehabilitative recreational therapists and long-term care level seniors. In addition, it is hoped that this will be the basic data to plan and provide more effective programs for the elderly by exploring the practical aspects of the elderly education site experienced by rehabilitative recreational therapists. Also, it is also expected to provide a practical guide to the direction of elderly education by exploring the meaning of integrated elderly recreational therapy and provide an understanding of it.
It is to understand the experience of rehabilitative recreational education for the elderly with long-term care levels of rehabilitative recreational therapists. Thus, in this study, a phenomenological research method of Giorgi (1970) was performed during qualitative research to explore and describe the meaning of the experience and to analyze the meaning of the experience in depth within the context of the social environment.
Interviews were conducted with the permission of the participants in the study to show their experience in rehabilitative recreational education for the elderly. Interviews were collected using 1:1 in-depth interviews and telephone calls, and the copied data was analyzed and categorized using Giorgi's four-stage analysis procedures.
The main results of this study are as follows.
Participants in this study were motivated to work as rehabilitative recreational therapists by strengthening their capacity as therapists, and they were found to suffer from loss of confidence, psychological exhaustion, and reversal of emotions in the experience process of elderly education. The participants experienced a change in perception as well as an understanding of the elderly through the process of experience in the education of the elderly. Participants' experience in education for the elderly served as an opportunity to reflect on their lives, along with an integrated understanding of the development process of their lives. Rehabilitative reacreational therapists who have successfully achieved empirical introspection have been found to provide positive feedback to the elderly, allowing the elderly learners to gain psychological stability and ego-integration, and leading to the positive changes for the elderly learners. In addition, positive changes in the elderly provide positive feedback to rehabilitative recreational therapists, which resulted in more motivation and growth for education. However, it was shown that the therapists who could not overcome difficulties, which are in the stage of psychological decline, end their work with professional skepticism.
Therefore, the meaning and conclusion of this study are as follows.
While the existing recreational-therapy-related studies were mainly conducted on quantitative studies that confirm the effectiveness of the program, this study conducted qualitative research to show the experience of rehabilitative reacreational therapists. In addition, it is meaningful that it was possible to broaden the understanding of rehabilitative recreational therapists by interpreting the essential meaning of education experience for the elderly. The conclusion of this study is as follows.
First, research participants were able to identify the nature of their experience in rehabilitative recreational education for the elderly, which was aimed at developing as a therapist. Second, long-term care education is essential for the elderly so that they can beautifully finish the end of their life with dignity, and the foundation should be established in lifelong education so that the educational system for such elderly can be established. Third, regular retraining of rehabilitative recreational therapists is needed. Through the psychological exhaustion and reversal that rehabilitation therapists face, regular retraining is necessary to overcome the symptoms positively, and having such a system creates a systematic system of education for senior citizens. Fourth, the training and support of senior education experts is needed at the national level. While the demand for senior education is on the rise, the training of specialized senior education experts is not keeping up with the demand. Fifth, welfare policies at the national level should be established so that anyone as well as senior citizens with a long-term care level can easily access and use these programs. Sixth, the researcher hopes that the elderly will find the meaning of their lives in the last remaining time of their lives. So, it is hoped that they will not end up in pain, loneliness, and fear, and a social culture that values and recognizes the mission of senior education professionals such as rehabilitative recreational therapists, nursing caregivers, and social workers with the elderly, is created. I would like to say that the beginning and end of it begins with our power to lead lifelong education.
Finally, the essence of the phenomenon experienced by rehabilitative recreational therapists was the granting of meaning to the stage of human life. I could see the therapists and seniors constantly searching for meaning in life.
The limitations of this study and suggestions for follow-up research are as follows.
First, the participants in this study conducted recreational therapy among the elderly admitted to long-term care facilities and day care centers as the subjects of play education, so there is a limitation in generalizing this as a result of all long-term care level elderly. Second, the research participants in this study have limitations to generalize to the results of all rehabilitative recreational therapists due to the specificity of the rehabilitative recreational therapists’ career.
Therefore, research will be needed to increase the likelihood of generalization of research over a career period. Third, this study cannot rule out the possibility that psychological changes and satisfaction in the elderly may be interpreted as subjective feelings of participants in the study. Therefore, in order to check the subjectivity and obtain more objective data, it would be meaningful as a follow-up study if in-depth interviews with the elderly are conducted. Fourth, this study focused on the experience of participants in long-term care education for the elderly. As a result, the limitation of this study is that it did not collect sufficient data on the personal or institutional parts of the rehabilitative recreational therapists. Therefore, it is intended to suggest the need for detailed research in the working environment, system, and policy areas of rehabilitative recreational therapists in the future.
