A Study on the Time Series Landscape Change of Yeongsan River Using QGIS - Focusing on Water Systems, Roads, Populations, and Land Cover-

The studies on the heritage related to rivers in Korea are inadequate given the spatial diversity and specificity of rivers as well as the administrative issues arising between cities and counties including basins. Accordingly, this study has examined the process of change which took place between the points in time where the landscape change was evident in the main stream of Yeongsan River, whose derived results are as follows.
First, as a result of examining each time specific water system related change process of the main stream of Yeongsan River, they could be roughly classified into three. There were found the changes in the topography of the curvilinear section following the artificial development of rivers, changes in the landscape of Ugak Lake and Guhado following the completion of Damyang Dam, Juksan Weir, and Seungchon Weir, and the change due to the inland sea landscape to freshwater lake landscape due to the reclamation project in the stream channel section.
Second, as a result of examining each time specific road change process of the main stream of Yeongsan River, during the 1930s when the role of water transportation was remained, the visible road change was not confirmed due to the linkage of land transportation and water transportation. The function of water transportation was lost completely due to the active development of land transportation in 1976 and the water barrier construction in 1981, while the currently overall road development was confirmed in the nearby regions such as Damyang, Gwangju, Naju, Muan, Mokpo, and Yeongam.
Third, as a result of analyzing the time specific population change time series for Muan, Naju, Damyang, Yeongam, Hampyeong, Mokpo, and Gwangju nearby the main stream of Yeongsan River, the reasons are determined to be the loss of the function of water transportation following the development of land transportation along with the water barrier construction in the stream channel of Yeongsan River in 1980, while Yeongsanpo port which contributed to the prosperity of region nearby Yeongsan River declined. In addition, it was confirmed that the population of the outside area is increasing as the agricultural water was secured following the creation of the river bank.
Fourth, as for the land use related change process in the main stream area of Yeongsan River, farmland, forest and Yeongsan River appeared as a major landscape in the late of 1980s, and when the urbanized area increased in the late of 1990, the urban landscape appeared around Yeongsan River. Thereafter, in the late of 2000s, the wetland and the bare land decreased by 67.10%, and the “Four Major Rivers Maintenance Project” was identified as a major factor of the landscape change. However, during the process that wetland was restored due to the vegetation transition process after the discontinuation of the “Four Major Rivers Maintenance Project,” the 5 landscape factors such as farmland, forest, downtown, river and wetland were identified.
It is determined the analytical results of the topography and landscape identified in this study will provide the clue for the follow-up study related with topography and landscape change process in the Yeongsan River area, and the identification of the relationship with the representative branches of Jiseokcheon, Hwangnyong River, Gomakwoncheon, Hampyeongcheon, and Gwangjucheon, which represent Yeongsan River, will be investigated as a future task.
