In this paper, we suggest two methods to improve the webserver performance significantly. These are a kernel thread to handle HTTP requests and a cache algorithm to speed up the requests for better deliveries of responses to clients. Based on both ways, we implement the kernel-based multi-thread web accelerator scheme called the HPWS (High Performance Web-Server Scheme). The HPWS works in combination with the Apache and accelerates the delivery content. It is built in the Linux-based kernel as a kernel module to reduce the functional overheads of the user-level applications. To validate the effectiveness of the HPWS, we evaluate its performance in comparison with the conventional Apache. As a result, the HPWS improves webserver performance by up to 500% for static contents delivery, and up to 250% for CGI contents delivery. Thereby, a high-performance webserver can be possibly implemented.First, this paper proposes a 'Real-time Contents Compression Architecture,' which maximizes the efficiency of web services, while reducing the response time at the same time. The proposed architecture not only guarantees the freshness of compressed contents but also minimizes the time needed to compress the message, especially when the traffic is heavy. Better performance is achieved by the 'Server-State Adaptive Algorithm (SSAA),' which determines whether the server is to compress the message and send the compressed message, or to send it uncompressed. The SSAA makes this decision, considering the traffic of the webserver. It also minimizes the CPU overhead of the webserver by monopolizing the CPU preemptively. And the minimization is achieved by using the kernel-thread, which compresses the message. This algorithm is verified through reasonable simulations: the test results show that the architecture saves the webserver bandwidth and shortens the response time dramatically. Thus, this architecture is expected to accelerate the transportation of massive contents under the HTTP, which has been regarded as an improper means for applications such as E-commerce, multimedia services, and home networking. Finally, we propose a kernel-thread Secure Socket Layer (SSL) accelerator which significantly increases the processing rate of SSL operations on a web server. Because most SSL servers previously used apply user threads for processing HTTPS requests, CPU overheads are inevitable. They end up slowing the processing time down. The SSL accelerator is embedded in the Linux kernel mode, utilizing the same number of the kernel threads as that of the CPUs.Thus, the Web server allocates the whole CPU resources to deal with the requests. In this way, the switching time incurred from using system calls is reduced and but also the sendreceive operations on the network layer are ameliorated. To validate the effectiveness of the scheme introduced, we compared the Apache Web server adopting SSL accelerator and the conventional Apache Web server. The test result verifies that the SSL accelerator actually improves the Web server performance by up to 200%.
