역사적 사고력 신장을 위한 역사학습방안 = A Study on History Learning Method for the Improvement of Historical Thinking : Based on E.H. Carr s Historical Awareness and New Cultural History

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구의 목적은 초등학교 학생들의 역사적 사고력 신장을 위해 E.H.Carr의 역사인식과 신문화사적 접근을 토대로 한 역사학습방안을 제시하는 데 있다. E.H.Carr는 역사가의 임무가 과거가 어떠했는지를 보여주는 것이라는 역사의 객관성을 강조했던 Ranke의 역사인식을 비판하고 역사는 과거 사실에 대한 역사가의 해석을 의미한다고 강조하였다. 신문화사적 접근은 E.H.Carr의 역사인식을 보다 확장시키면서 단선적 역사관이 아닌 역사의 중층성과 다양성을 강조한다. 즉 과거 사실에 대한 다양한 역사해석의 가능성과 지배층의 역사만이 아니라 피지배층, 여성 등 상대적으로 소외되었던 대상들의 역사도 중시한다. 이 두 접근방식은 기존의 역사적 사실에 대한 암기위주의 역사교육을 지양하고 사고력을 중시하는 역사교육이 이루어질 수 있는 단초를 제공한다.
역사가 역사가의 해석이라는 것은 곧 보편타당한 진리와 사실을 습득하는 것처럼 역사적 사실을 암기하고 이를 확인하는 과정이 역사학습이 아니라는 것을 반증한다. 오히려 역사학습은 학생들이 여러 과거 사실과 역사가의 해석들을 토대로 자신의 관점으로 역사를 구성해나가는 역사적 사고과정을 강조하는 것이다. 당시 시대적 상황과 인물들의 생각 및 행동 등의 여러 정황적 증거를 토대로 맥락에 맞추어 구성하고, 기존의 텍스트 이면에 잠재되어 있는 의미를 찾아내는 과정은 역사적 사고력을 신장시킬 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 수 있다. 이러한 과정으로 시간 속에 있는 인간과 사회 연구를 통해 인간의 본성에 대한 접근이라는 역사학과 역사교육의 본질에 다가갈 수 있다는 점에서 E.H.Carr의 역사인식과 신문화사적 접근을 중심으로 한 역사학습방안의 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study was to examine a history learning method based on E.H. Carr s historical awareness and new cultural history in a bid to boost the historical thinking of elementary school students. E.H. Carr criticized Ranke s historical awareness who put emphasis on the objectivity of history on the ground that the mission of a historian would be to show what the past was like, and he stressed that history refers to how a historian interprets the facts in the past. The approach of new cultural history enlarged E.H. Carr s historical awareness and places emphasis on the multidimensionality and diversity of history. That is, it values the diverse interpretation of history and the history of not only the ruling parties but disadvantaged people such as the oppressed classes and women. The two approaches give a clue how history education can be conducted by focusing on thinking faculty instead of merely having learners learn historical facts by rote.
The argument that history is the very interpretation of historians implies that history learning is not simply to memorize and check historical facts. Memorizing is necessary when one learns about the universal truth or facts, but history learning should be regarded as a historical thinking process that students construct history from their own perspective based on the facts of the past and the interpretations of historians. Constructing history based on various contemporary situations and the ideas and behaviors of contemporary people and finding a meaning behind the scene will be a good opportunity for students to foster their historical thinking faculty. The development of a history learning method based on E.H. Carr s historical awareness and new cultural history will be worth doing in that the two approaches makes it possible to research man and society to take a substantial approach to human nature, which is the essence of historical studies and history education.
