安岳地方에서의 愛國啓蒙運動 -安岳勉學會와 西北學會 활동을 중심으로- = The patriotic enlighten campaign in Anak district -By focusing on the activities of Myung Hak Hwae and Su Buk Academic Society

It was Anak(安岳) district where the patriotic enlighten campaign broke out most actively after entering into the Ulsa Treaty(乙巳條約) which made the power of the Korean government(Dae Han Imperial Government) grow weaker and weaker. Myun Hak Hoae(勉學會) the Su Buk Academic Society(西北學會) had I great effect for the enlighten campaign in this region to grow vividly.
Myun Hak Hoae was composed of several dominant readers such as Choi Kwang Ok(崔光玉), Kim Young Chei(金庸濟), and Choi Myung Sik(崔明植) in Anak district. At those time, a lot of outstanding people corning from other regions such as Kim Koo(金九), No Baeck Leen(盧伯麟) and Chang Woon Jin(張膺震) flock together in An& &strict. Therefore, it naturally became the center of the patriotic enlighten campaign in Hwang Hae Do.
Myun Hak Hoae developed several kinds of important businesses as follows; establishing Myun Hak Hook Store(勉學書鋪), operating the summer teacher training course three times, holding the unified spring field day two times, organizing the educational general meetings in western side and developing the national industry promoting campaign.
These businesses of Myun Hak Hoae shows the advancement of society and economy in Anak district since even in Seoul, at those times there were no establishment of the organization for patriotic enlightenment. In addition, those achievements was also important in that important figures of the Hwang Hae Do made the patriotic enlightenment organizations for themselves during this hard time.
These businesses of Myun Hak Hoae affected a lot to the peripheral region of Anak. Chaeryung(載寧) was affected for the first time by those activities because it was adjacent to
Anak district. Especially the nearest location of Choa Uyl Myun(左栗面) and Woo, Uyl Myun(右栗面) of Chaeryung enabled those regions to develop the patriotic enlighten campaign a lot through the influence of Myun Hak Hoae. Kwang Lee(光理) School, Yung Yai(陸藝) School, Chang Dong(昌東) School established in those regions were the first branch schools of Su Buk Academic Society. Chaeryung branch office of Su Buk Academic Society was incorporated by the people driving those three schools.
In Anak, no branch parties of Su Buk Academic Society established, but two branch schools, Bong Sam(奉三) School and Rae Young(培英) school, were built. Those two branch schools did the role of not only delivering the modern learning but also spreading the patriotic enlighten campaign.
Bong Sam School was the first private school established In the Young Moon Myun(龍門面), the center of Catholicism In that area. Although originally this school was founded by French missionaries the attached school of Catholic church, it was evolved under the protection of Catholic church into the branch school of Su Buk Academic Society The fact that Bong Sam school became the branch school of Su Buk Academic Society shows that Su Buk Academic Society was related to the Catholic power which was dominant in Anak district.
The modern education of Su Buk Academic Society wore the characteristics of openness and progressiveness through those branch schools of Su Buk Academic Society such as Bong Sam School and Bae Young School. In addition to this, the fact shows how great(strong) the influence of the modern culture symbolized by the Catholicism and Christianity and commercial capitalists were in Anak society at that time.
Finally, the patriotic enlighten campaign in Anak district was leaded by Anak Myun Hak Hoae and Su Buk Academic Society. Later the influencing power of these two organizations was spread out all over the region of Hwang Hae Do to set up branch societies and schools in every place. The activities done by two organizations enabled Anak district to became the center of Hwang Hae Do as Pyung Yang, the heart of Pyung An Do at the beginning of 20th century.
