학문 목적 읽기 교육을 위한 한국어 학습자의 요구 분석 연구 = Needs analysis of Korean learners for reading education for academic purpose

Recently, increasing foreign students show the needs of their academic purpose studying in the universities. This study has an objectiveness of showing the needs of the students who are planning to study in the academic course in Korea and to complete their successful academic goal, they need special Korean courses for academic study. For this study, needs analysis was used to find out what the students need to learn in reading beforehand for academic purpose. This is the abstract of this study. In chapter I, we show the objectiveness of this study. To study in the university, reading skill is the most critical skills students need in advance. Therefore, to design the educational plan for Korean students for academic purpose needs analysis is necessary. Also, we showed the current numbers and ratios of foreign students in Korean Universities and discussed about academic purpose Korean language teaching. In chapter II, as a theoretical basis, we explain about general reading as a second language learning. In addition, we examine the theories of language learning for academic purpose. For EAP students, content-based language instruction is needed, and teaching reading skills on the basis of intertextuality, and cognitive and metacognitive strategies were shown. In chapter III, as a needs analysis, we introduce pilot studying, study process, and subject of the study. This study was made as the subject of the study of 126 foreign students in Korean universities. To analyse their needs of reading, survey was used. In chapter IV, needs analysis was used about reading for students of academic purpose. As a result, respondents answered they used reading more rather than other language skills. Also they felt difficulties on reading than other skills. The most difficult reading activity is ''reading comprehension'' and the second one is ''reading strategy'' and ''lexical comprehension''. Next, students need ''reading for major subject or cultural subjects'' in advance. They need the most important activity for their reading is ''to read and comprehend of major subject of study''. In chapter V, as a result of the needs analysis, we draw a plan on teaching reading for students of academic purpose. It shows the necessity of reading materials of cultural subject in the university, teaching strategy for effective reading, teaching lexical terms to improve their vocabularies and integrating other language skills. In chapter VI, we summarize those researches, and show the limitations and the necessities of this study. Finally, we add more proposal for systemizing lexical lists, diversifying reading materials and more researches.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 대학에서 학문을 하기 위하여 국내 대학에 입학하는 외국인 유학생의 수가 늘어나고 있음을 인식하고, 그들이 국내 대학에서 성공적인 학문을 하기 위해 한국어 교육 기관에서 학문 목적 한국어 학습자를 위한 수업이 이루어져야 함을 밝히는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 대학에서 학문을 하는데 필요한 언어 기능인 읽기의 중요성과 함께 학문 목적 학습자의 읽기에 대한 요구 조사를 실시함으로서 앞으로의 한국어 교육 기관에서 학문 목적 학습자를 위한 교육 방안 마련을 제시해 보고자 한다. 본 연구를 간단히 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1장에서는 본 연구의 목적을 밝혔다. 대학에서 학문을 할 때 읽기는 가장 중요한 언어 기능의 하나이며 따라서 학문 목적 학습자를 위한 한국어 교육 방안을 마련하기 위하여 학문 목적 학습자들의 요구를 분석함이 중요함을 밝혔다. 또한 국내 대학의 외국인 유학생 현황과 학문 목적 한국어에 대한 기존 논의에 대해서 살펴보았다. 2장에서는 본 연구의 이론적 배경으로서 제2언어에서의 일반적 읽기에 대해서 살펴보았으며, 학문 목적 언어 교육에 관련된 이론에 대해서 살펴보았다. 학문 목적 학습자를 위한 언어 이론으로 내용 중심의 언어 학습이 이루어져야 하며, 텍스트간의 상호텍스트성을 바탕으로 한 읽기 지도, 인지적, 초인지적 전략 등을 소개하였다. 3장에서는 본 연구의 연구방법으로 예비조사, 본 조사 및 연구 절차, 연구 대상을 소개하였다. 본 연구는 현재 국내 대학에 재학 중인 외국인 유학생 126명을 대상으로 이루어졌으며 이들의 읽기에 대한 요구를 분석하기 위하여 설문을 실시하였다. 4장에서는 학문 목적 학습자의 읽기에 대한 요구를 분석하였다. 요구 분석 결과 응답자들은 학문적 상황에서는 읽기를 다른 기능에 비해 많이 사용하고 어려워하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 학업 중 많이 접하고, 어려워하는 읽기 활동으로 ‘내용 이해’를 가장 어려워하는 것으로 나타났으며 다음으로는 ‘읽기 전략’, ‘어휘이해’의 순으로 나타났다. 다음으로 한국어 교육에서의 읽기 자료에 대한 요구로서 ‘전공이나 교양 과목과 관련된 읽기 자료’를 원하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 ‘전공 서적 읽고 내용 이해하기’를 학문 목적 학습자에게 가장 필요한 읽기 활동이라고 생각하는 것으로 나타났다. 5장에서는 지금까지의 요구 분석 결과를 바탕으로 한국어 교육 현장에서 학문 목적 학습자를 위한 읽기 지도에 대한 방안을 모색해 보았다. 내용 이해를 돕기 위한 대학 교양 교과목 중심의 읽기 자료가 필요함을 제시하였고, 효율적인 읽기를 위한 읽기 전략 지도, 어휘력 향상을 위한 전공 어휘 교육의 필요성, 다른 언어 기능과의 통합 방안에 대해서 제시하였다. 6장에서는 지금까지의 연구 내용을 요약하고 연구 결과를 바탕으로 한 본 연구의 제한점, 연구의 의의 등을 살펴보았다. 끝으로 본 연구가 가지는 제한점을 살펴보고, 학문적 읽기 교육에 필요한 전문적 어휘 목록의 체계화, 읽기 자료 내용의 다양성 등 후속 연구를 위한 제언을 덧붙였다.
