역사소설 『통곡』과 입체적 역사로서의 가치 = The historical novel 『Tonggok』 and the value as the multidimensional history

국문 초록 (Abstract)

1948년 『백민』에 단편 「번요(煩擾)의 거리」를 발표하며 등단한 류주현은 『조선총독부』, 『대한제국』, 『대원군』, 『파천무』, 『군학도』 등의 대작을 연달아 발표함으로써 역사에 대한 해석과 재해석을 통해 현재의 문제에 깊이 천착한 작가였다. 그 가운데 『통곡』은 1969년 동아일보에 연재된 역사소설로 1972년 전체 10권으로 발간된 전집에 3권으로 분책되어 출판되었다.
그런데 류주현에 대한 평단과 학계의 평가는 대체로 인색한 편이다. 크게 보면 역사소설가라는 인상이 1950년대와 60년대 초반 그의 중‧단편 소설에 대한 탐색을 제한했고, 전후문학이나 1950년대 소설문학을 다룰 때에도 배제되는 요인이었다고 할 수 있다. 또 대중적 지면으로 분류되는 신문 연재를 통해 다수의 작품을 발표한 탓에 과도한 외면을 받았다고도 볼 수도 있다.
본고는 역사소설은 그 자체가 역사 기록으로서의 가치를 갖는다고 보았다. 역사소설은 다루고 있는 시대의 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화적 제환경을 작품의 무대로 전제하는 것이고, 그것을 소설적으로 구현하기 위해 구체적이고 입체적인 방식으로 상황 설정을 하기 때문이다. 따라서 강한 보고성과 시대적 특수성을 포함한다는 점에서 역사소설은 역사 기록으로서의 가치를 갖는다고 본 것이다.
『통곡』은 세 가지 관점에서 역사적 보편성과 기록성을 확보하고 있었다. 첫째 백성의 관점에서 백성의 안위와 안녕을 지향한 점, 둘째 국가의 내적 혼란은 결국 외침을 야기한다는 정치사적 관점, 셋째 인간적 사랑의 관점 등에서 보편성을 보여주었다. 또한 『통곡』은 디테일의 측면에서 입체적 역사로서의 기록적 가치를 획득하고 있음을 알 수 있었다.
역사소설은 역사적 사실(사건)의 소설적 입체화를 통해 역사 지식의 전승과 역사관 형성에 기여한다. 또한 역사적 사실의 배경이 되는 해당 시대의 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화 등을 재구성함으로써 역사 현장의 기록자 역할을 한다. 궁극적으로 역사적 사실을 통해 자기 시대의 과제와 문제의식을 환기함으로써 과거를 통해 현재를, 현재를 통해 미래를 사유하는 입체적 역사학의 지평에 도달한다. 바로 이 점이 류주현의 『통곡』이 오늘날까지 의미를 갖는 이유이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Ryu Ju-hyeon(1921-1982), who debuted in 1948 with the short story 「Troubled Streets」 in 『Baekmin』, was a writer committed to interpreting and reinterpreting history to address contemporary issues deeply by publishing a series of masterpieces include 『Chosun-Chongdokbu』, 『The Korean Empire』, 『The Daewongun』, 『Pacheonmu』, and 『Gunhakdo』. Among these, 『Tonggok』, a historical novel serialized in the 《Dong-A Ilbo》 in 1969, was published in divided into three volumes as part of a 10-volume collection in 1972.
However, critical and academic evaluations of Ju-hyeon Ryu had generally been harsh. Broadly speaking, his image as a historical novelist limited the exploration of his short and medium-length stories from the 1950s to the early 1960s, and this was the main reason excluded from discussions of post-war literature or 1950s fiction. Furthermore, the fact that he published many works through newspaper serials, classified as a popular medium, might have led to excessive neglect.
This study posits that the historical novel possesses value as historical records. The historical novel is the basis of the political, economic, social, and cultural conditions set on the stage and sets the situations in concrete and multidimensional ways in order to realize these conditions. Therefore, the historical novel has value as a historical record due to its strong reporting nature and inclusion of historical specificity.
『Tonggok』 secures historical universality and record value from three perspectives. First, it emphasizes the well-being and safety of the people from the people's perspective. Second, from a political history perspective, it illustrates that internal chaos in a state eventually leads to external invasions. Third, it shows universality from the perspective of human love. Additionally, 『Tonggok』 achieves the value of a multidimensional historical record through its detailed descriptions.
The historical novel contributes to the transmission of historical knowledge and the formation of historical perspectives by novelistically embodying historical facts(events). It also plays the role of a recorder of historical scenes by reconstructing the political, economic, social, and cultural aspects of the respective eras that serve as backgrounds for historical facts. Ultimately, it reaches the horizon of multidimensional historiography, which contemplates the present through the past and the future through the present by evoking contemporary tasks and the critical mind through historical facts. This is why Ryu Ju-hyeon's 『Tonggok』 remains significant to this day.
