This paper explores the thoughts of Augustine, Thomas Aquinas and Martin Luther, raising questions on the nature of ‘free will’ in relation to Christian Ethics.
Augustine’s view on human free will is related to his theology of original sin. Humans have original sin as well as free will, so humans cannot avoid the evil reality with only the free will. Original sin distorts human will and because of it, humans inevitably face corruption and sufferings. Since human will is only free to commit sin, humans have to unite with God through divine grace in order to solve the problem of sin and evil.
On the other hand, Aquinas, following Aristotle, defines free will as the human nature. Humans can pursue good goals with their rational freedom and possess potentials to head towards God’s will. Aquinas postulates that human free will is the inner moral criterion for discerning right and wrong, which allows humans potentials for moral virtues.
Martin Luther, among the three theologians, has the most limited and negative view on human free will. Humans are totally corrupted and, thus, only by God’s grace they can have justification. Luther insists that, if humans have free will in terms of soteriology, the atonement of the Cross is meaningless. Therefore, Luther considers human free will is only limited to freedom of committing sin.
After reviewing the related issues briefly, this paper ends with the importance of Christian classic notions of free will in cultivating a sense of morality in the world where Christian ethics is called to respond to the challenges we face today.
