This study is to investigate the physical and chemical characteristics of montmorillonite clay minerals produced in Korea, which has been proved to be of excellent quality as an agent of soil amelioration, and the physical and chemical properties of some clay minerals which paddy soils used as the sample (Sandy clay of Kun-san area, light clay of I-ri area, clay loam of Kyung-dae area, sand soil of Kim-chon area) have already contained before the application of montmorillonite. The experiment was also carried out to determine the effects on the application of montmorillonite clay minerals produced in Korea which may make these paddy soils change their chemical properties. The results obtained are summarized as follows.
1. The investigation in the physical and chemical properties of montmorillonite clay minerals used.
① According to the experiment by means of electronmicroscope, x-ray diffraction and Hendricks color reaction, the principal constituent mineral of montmorillonite produced in Korea is clarified to be montmorillonite clay mineral.
② It is found that the degree of swelling and cohesion of montmorillonite is markedly high, and the sedimentation volume in water is enlarged as much as two times. These results indicate that the montmorillonite is a kind of high-quality clay minerals containing great many colloid particles of clay below I μ in diameter.
But it is admitted that the montmorillonite has a drawback, for its raw mineral has too low pH and low degree of base saturation.
2. The results on the physical and chemical properties of the clay minerals which paddy soils have contained before the application of montmorillonite clay minerals.
① The paddy soils sampled from Kun-san and I-ri area, which consist of alluvial soils formed with products of weathering from fluvial and marine soils, are presumed to be mainly kaolin group's clay mineral of 1 ; 1 type in form of lattice and the small amount of quartz(opalein, allophane). It is shown that these soils have not only low permeability but bad drainage of water. In addition, it is found that base exchange capacity and degree of base saturation of these soils are significantly low, From these results mentioned above, these soils are proved to be poor.
② The paddy soil sampled from Kyung-dae area, which consists of alluvial soils formed with products of weathering from aqueous rock on the hill and valley, in presumed to be a microparticle soil whose prineipal constituent clay is quartz clay mineral. In addition, there is supposedly a little kaolin group's clay mineral of 1 ; 1 type in form of lattice in this soil. Although the amount of leaching loss of nutrients is of comparatively high level and the degree of base saturation is low.
③ It is presumed that the principal constituent clay of the paddy soil sampled from Kim-chon area, which consists of coarse sand originated from granite and gneiss, is also kaolin group's clay mineral of 1 ; 1 type in form of lattice. This soil is considered to be of inferior quality since it is observed that base exchange capacity is very low, permeability extremely high and ground-water exists close to the surface soil.
3. The results on changes of physical properties in paddy soils by the application of montmorillonite clay minerals.
The total clay content of the used soils practically increased because of adding montmorillonite clay minerals, but it is proved to be reduced due to the characteristics of montmorillonite. Then it is found that the sedimentation volume in water is enlarged, the permeability markedly repressed and the porosity of clayey soil tends to be approaching up to the porosity of loam.
4. The results on changes of chemical properties in the paddy soils by the application of montmorillonite clay minerals.
① The base exchange capacity by the application of montmorillonite clay minerals generally incresses and the base absorptive power of the paddy soils dressed with mont. 1 is stronger than that of the paddy soils dressed with mont. 2. The weak absorptic power of the paddy soils applied with mont. 2 indicates that the mont. 2 has the great effect on making the soils absorb and release smoothly nutrients for rice plant.
② While pH and the degree of base saturation in the soils applied with mont. 1 are reduced, the rise in degree of base saturation in the soils dressed with mont. 2 is due to the increase of exchangable base and the increase of pH is attributed to the marked effect of improving the soil condition.
③ It is clarified that the content of organic matters in the soils, to which montmorillonite clay mineral has been applied for a short time, tends to be slightly reduced, whereas that in the soil of "Demonstration Farms" where the experiment has been conducted to examine the grewth of rice plant during one year, is significantly raised.
5. It is found that the activities of saccharase and amylase in the soils, to which montmorillonite has been applied for a short time, are inclined to be more or less reduced, while these enzymes in the soils sampled from "Demonstration Farm" of Kun-san and I-ri area acted vigorously as compared with the control area.
