The purpose of this paper is to study the critique of the Economics of Adam Smith. by Thorstein Veblen, who established the Institutionalism as a peculiar paradigm.
We can regard most part of the Veblen's economics to be constructed with the attack on main postulates in the Classical Economics and the criticism to the content and methodology of the marginalism.
Under the influence of J.Dewey, Veblen scrutinized the fundamental preconceptions of A. Smith, distinguished between the animistic and the teleological, and remarked that these two were respectively perceived in the different aspects.
Smith's animistic disposition Veblen thought, lacked the causality in that smoothly continuing natural process of things and connected the gaps or intermissions in the causal relationship.
In the examination on Smith's theory of value. Veblen attacked the teleological bias; Smith's concept of the real value is the value that is conferred to various commodities by economists under the teleological preconceptions. This real value or natural price has no relationship with the value conferred in the real world and with the teleological theory in the discussion of actual valuation process.
Smith's teleological preconceptions according to Veblen was exemplified in the normalization of data or conjectural history and the arbitrariness of Smith can be easily found in the discourse on the origin and the use of money. Veblen ascribed these characteristics of Smith's economics to the preconceptions. And he thought that Smith had perceived the concept of human nature to be somewhat hedonistic, and normalized human motives and activities so to be fit to the requirement of the natural order.
After Smith, Veblen argued the consistent normalizations of human nature resulted (almost) from the utilitarian philosophy.
