The purpose of this thesis lies not in drawing further details of definition on primitivism but in clarifying the primitive elements in D. H. Lawrence's novels, Therefore the brief definition of two kinds of primitivisms is satisfactory for the present purpose.
The main concerns are D. H. Lawrence's primitive elements which were viewed by myth criticism, and anthropological viewpoint, the mythological and archetypal approaches which were accelerated by the recent discoveries in anthropology, are conducted on Lawrence's works.
One of the major principles of primitivism which influenced romanticism greatly arid was described s worshiper of nature showing disrespect toward civilization as repressive and enslaving, is known to equate the primitive as being childlike and natural, suspecting the intellect and praising the noble savage.
The important features of the primitive arid view are animism, natural piety and the rituals. Lawrence's sense of death as continuous with life rather than mere negation of it is explicitly expressed in The ship of death.
The primitivism is nat returning to the primitive state refusing the civilization but reverting to the profound primitive self, abandoning corrupted civilized self, Lawrence's broad-consciousness is not considered to he achieved entirely in sexual relationship, In Lawrentian term When Fan which is the life-force circulating among all things is felt, the blood-consciousness is felt simultaneously. The primitivism straightforwardly means being in blood-consciousness.
