This thesis is intended to identify the reality of Pansori and Changgeuk ('Korean traditional opera') through investigating patterns of their activities under the social background in the 1940s which is divided into the first and the second half in that period depending on the nature of social background.
In the 1940s, there was different social environment in which were the strong control over a performance culture conducted under wartime at the end of the Japanese occupation and an eager to revive the national culture in a new era began with Independence. Nevertheless, Pansori and Changgeuk in the 1940s were adapted to a given period and gave Pansori and Changgeuk activities in the upcoming 1950s prospects by continuing the accomplishment of the 1930s steadily. The evolution of Pansori and Changgeuk in the 1940s can be summerized as follows.
Pansori and Changgeuk in the 1940s were an extension of the prosperous activities in 1930s. Pansori of the 1930s was actively performed through Clean Pansori Movement and other projects led by Korea Melody Association formed in 1930. Also, in the 1930s, Master Singers' Competition of the original performance style which started from the 1920s under the auspices of newspapers and other organizations providing main stages for Pansori were prevailed throughout the country. Like this prevalence of Master Singer's Competition acted as an factor to make Pansori promoted and prevailed it in nationwide.
In the 1930s, Pansori performance as Changgeuk gradually increased with the efforts of Korea Vocal Music Study Association from its formation in 1934. With the Association that had a producer and adapter to apply itself to spruce up the form, Changgeuk came to have clearly distinguished dramatis personae and a perfect paraphernalia including appropriate costumes and stage lighting. Furthermore, it used various musiucal instruments for accompaniment, thus perfecting the frame of Changgeuk.
Chapter III surveys the development of Pansori and Changgeuk in the early 1940s, which underwent changes in the wake of the cultural control policy strongly enforced throughout Korea by Japanese Imperialists on a war footing.
Starting in December 1940, Japanese Imperialists put all performance culture in Korea under their control and formed various associations in order to take advantage of it as entertainment for efficient war operation. Korea Vocal Music Study Association that had been active became affiliated with Korea Theater Association, while some of the Association's members were affiliated with Korea Music Association. Besides, several small Changgeuk companies were active as members of Korea Entertainment Association.
To make sure that all performances were possible with permission from them, Japanese Imperialists put a comprehensive ban on all autonomous activities of Pansori organization. Moreover, Japanese Imperialists shut down the two local dailies of Chosunilbo and Dongailbo to force the simultaneous disappearance of 'excellent singers' competitions' previously flourishing around the country. Meantime, as Japanese Imperialists made sure that all Pansori performances were possible through the events supervised by Maeil shinbo and Korea Music Association as their arms, Pansori performance in the early 1940s suffered a drastic decline.
Changgeuk in the early 1940s had its legitimate start with Hwarang Changgeuk Company, created as a spinoff from Korea Vocal Music Study Association. Especially the new pieces of Changgeuk performed by the companies in that period were created by the writers who belonged to Korea Playwrights Association.
Japanese Imperialists formed Korea Theatrical Culture Association by merging Korea Theater Association and Korea Entertainment Association to further promote the activity of the Changgeuk companies. The Changgeuk companies steadily performed with the existing Changgeuk, the pro-Japanese works provided by Korea Playwrights Association, and the new pieces with sure-fire commercial potential. Japanese Imperialists not only let the Changgeuk companies perform in Japanese, but also politically charged plays in conformity to the wartime regime. Furthermore, in an attempt to bring maximum nationwide publicity to their colonial policy, Japanese Imperialists encouraged the regional performance by the Changgeuk companies, thereby turning them into entertainment as a tool of their political propaganda.
Chapter IV checks how Pansori and Changgeuk responded to the period after the national liberation when people had such a strong craving for a revival of the national culture.
After the brief euphoria following the Liberation, the Korean society was awash in the conflict between the Left and the Right. Nonetheless, the Korean traditional musicians were united in creating Korean Classical Music Hall to rebuild Korean classical music and promptly engaged in independent activities. Especially, Korean Classical Music Hall formed Gukgeuksa ('Korean Theater Company') and operated with a focus on Changgeuk, a comprehensive performance art form that ensured participation of all genres of the Classical Music Hall. Meanwhile, the Korean traditional musicians called the traditional music and Chenaggeuk each "gukak" ('national music') and "gukgeuk" ('national theater'), and made efforts to inscribe anew the national music with the advent of a new era.
As Dongailbo and Chosin Ilbo that had been closed in the late 1940s resumed their publication and new newspapers like Kyunghang Shinmun were founded, not only 'excellent singers' competitions' but also new types of performances came in sight, thus revitalizing Pansori performance. Especially the 'excellent singers' competitions' and new performances that appeared after the national liberation provided in outdoor settings a combination of traditional Korean music and folk entertainment, thereby contributing to the elevation of the national spirit through revival of the national culture.
Immediately after the Liberation, there appeared Yeolsaga, a newly-created Pansori piece based on a story of four independence fighters who resisted the Japanese Imperialists. Yeolsaga, created by Park Dong-sil with lines that inspired anti-Japanese spirit and in pursuit of a popular quality that ensured everyone's sing-along, would be loved by all nation for the next two decades. Its popularity made a considerable contribution to reviving Pansori whose popularity was slowly recovering with the Liberation.
Changgeuk in the late 1940s was performed mostly by Gukgeuksa, the umbrella of Korean Classical Music Hall. The organization made efforts to clear up the remaining influence from the Changeeuk activities during the Japanese Colonial Occupation by presenting the existing pieces as well as the newly-created ones by new writers.
After the Liberation, several small Changgeuk companies were engaged in their independent activities around the formation of Gukgeuksa. Notably, Gwangju Vocal Music Study Association promptly united Pansori singers into a Changgeuk company as its umbrella organization, which spearheaded Changgeuk performance ahead of Gukgeuksa. Besides, women's Changgeuk groups formed after the creation of Gukgeuksa instantly found popularity among people, predicting a change in performance with diversification of the genre.
