곰소 漁村에 關한 地理學的 硏究 = A Geographical Study of Fishing Villages on Gomso Bay

Fishing villages are changed its landscape, spatial structure and spatial systems in the course of the historical times. The purpose of this study is to search out the regional characteristics of Gom so fishing village according to historical times. For the study I took several field surveys to the target area. Followings are the study results;
1) Gomso fishing village has been developed from 1940 to 1960. Its prosperity is due to the decline of Julpo fishing village.
2) The peak of prosperity is at that time of a large Jogi (pseudosciaena manchurica) catch quota in the sea around Woedo Island. Primitive stage of village establishment consolidated by introducing an inn and a pub for the fishermen.
3) The type of house has a variety on their functions. Due to the seasonal migrations of fishermen and fish dealers most of houses have many rooms for rent.
4) During the Japanese occupation, they planned the village pattern in a rectangular type. The pattern is very different from the other compact fishing villages.
5) Majority of inhabitants are engaged in fishing and commercial activities. In recent time, fishing activities are declining because of the decrease in fish catch quota around this area.
6) Spatial structures of the village has typical characteristics according to its function and proximity to the harbor. Near the harbor side agglomerated fishery facilities such as fishing cooperatives, commission sale place, freezing plant, oil tanks and ship repair shops. Next to this section located fishing-tool shop, restaurant, pub, general shops and an inn. Behind this section induced a residential area for the inhabitants.
7) The population structure is very typical in this village. At the ration of age, the group of 0-14 and 20-39 are very high because youngsters and adults are working as fishermen.
8) Comparing with other fishing villages on the Western coast, nowadays this village has a small seasonal migration of people because of the recent decline in fishing activities around this area. But after introducing the laver plants this village revives from the economic stagnation to the prosperity in aquaculture.
