청소년의 외모에 대한 사회문화적 태도, 공적 자의식, 신체만족도와 이상식이행동 간 관계에 대한 구조방정식 모델

The purpose of this study is to identify the influence of sociocultural attitudes towards appearance, public self-consciousness, and body satisfaction on the abnormal eating behavior of adolescents. This study was conducted based on previous studies and associated theories, using the abnormal eating behavior of adolescents as a dependable variable and sociocultural attitudes towards appearance, public self-consciousness, and body satisfaction as independent variables.

The issues of this study are as follows.

1. Do the sociocultural attitudes towards appearance, public self-consciousness, and body satisfaction of adolescents affect directly on their abnormal eating behavior?
2. Does the sociocultural attitudes towards appearance of adolescents affect directly on their public self-consciousness and body satisfaction?
3. Does the public self-consciousness of adolescents affect directly on their body satisfaction?

For this study 450 students, currently the second grades of middle and high schools in Daegu, were targeted. The research tools used in this study are: Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire (SATAQ) developed by Heinberg, Thompson, and Stormer (1995), which was translated by Lee Sang-sun and Oh Kyung-ja (2003), and the SATAQ modified by Smolak, Levine and Thompson (2001) targeting boy and girl students in middle schools were referenced and modified for the scale of sociocultural attitudes towards appearance; the modified version of Scheier and Carver (1985) and the translated version of Kim Eun-jung (1994) for the self-consciousness scale developed by Fenigstein, Scheier and Buss (1975) were used for measuring the scale of public self-consciousness; the Body Esteem Scale (BES) developed by Mendelson, Mendelson, Andrews, Balfour, and Bucholz(1997) targeting adolescents and adults, and its translated version by Lee Jung-sook (2001) was modified and used for measuring the scale of body satisfaction; Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ) developed by Van Strien, Frijters, Bergers, and Defares (1986) and its translated version by Kim Hyo-jung, Lee Im-soon, and Kim Ji-hye (1996) were modified and used for measuring the scale of eating behavior.

SPSS 19 for Windows and AMOS 20 were used for the analysis of the data collected.

The results of this study are as followed.

First, the sociocultural attitudes towards appearance and body satisfaction of adolescents affect directly on their abnormal eating behavior, but public self-consciousness affects indirectly on their abnormal eating behavior.
Second, the sociocultural attitudes towards appearance of adolescents affects directly on their public self-consciousness and body satisfaction.
Third, the public self-consciousness of adolescents affects directly on their body satisfaction.

In conclusion, sociocultural attitudes towards appearance and body satisfaction should be considered to establish the healthy eating behavior of adolescents. Particularly, sociocultural attitudes towards appearance is need to be accounted for with care, and a close paying attention on the adolescents with a high scale of the attitude is required. Since public self-consciousness also affects abnormal eating behavior via body satisfaction, it should be considered, too.
